The problem with being a weird geek like me is that I've seen the coolest thing I've seen in years and it's a DIY pie launcher

@SkylerRingtail @Fruitkitty yeah I'd sign up for that job right away.

Maybe we need to set it up as a contracting thing. "Hey, do you build kinky machines? are you afraid they're gonna hurt somebody? Hire KinkQACo to do a safety assessment!"

I bet @qdot would have some input

As former software QA myself, I would also sign up right away.

I can see the application now... "As a former QA person and current kinky asexual, the one thing that excites me more than anything else is working out the kinks in your kink devices!"

Or the company advertisement...
"Kinky AF and ready to help you debug your teledildonic devices. BugChasers LLC - we catch 'em all, so you don't have to."

...The name might need some workshopping.

Can't believe they spent a gigawatt training GPT3 and the fucker isn't even trying to overthrow humanity.

Look, where I come from, if you burn a gigawatt of energy to make an AI, it had better damn well go skynet on you.

A gigawatt FOR HOW LONG?

bastian ,
@bastian@digitalcourage.social avatar

@foone

just a pet peeve of mine: pointing out falsly used units

gigawatt is power. How much gigajoules can be used in one second. Just like miles per hour.

the total amount can be measured in gigawatthours. That is equivalent to drawing one gigawatt for one hour.

so they used the crazy amount of one gigawatthour. 😲

So I just got back from a Menards run and I've noticed something fascinating:

Menards has always had a lot of store brands. But they're really pushing a new food brand called Marcella. Stuff like coffee, jams and jellies, prepared foods, sodas, etc. A lot of it is fairly unique - I bought a maraschino cherry cola on a whim and it was pretty great!

The weird part? They're pricing this in-house stuff higher than name brands. The soda was a tad more expensive than the Sprecher's next to it!

So there's always the debate between QWERTY and alphabetical keyboards, but everyone is missing the obvious way to solve this disagreement.

There's no reason the alphabet HAS to be in that order. It's arbitrary, and English would work almost completely the same if the alphabet was in a different order, you know?

So, let's just put the alphabet in QWERTY order!
It'd solve all our problems from Q to M.

Tesla is also getting rid of its public policy team, despite robotaxi ambitions.

Replacing their CEO is a necessary condition for the survival of #Tesla though it may not be sufficient. A turnaround from a stale product palette would take years, their reputation is ruined, BYD and others have far lower costs and better battery tech. No wonder the execs who recently left have sold all their shares.

For the last two years I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening to Today" links here. Mastodon has some problems with threads containing hundreds of posts, so I re-create the thread once a year.

If you'd like to see, here's my "year two" thread: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/110266770603341546

Or, alternately, every song from year two in the least practical format possible: A 301-song, 38-hour YouTube playlist (note: video #1 contains flashing):

What I'm listening to today: "Upside- Down VHS III", A Beautiful Burning World ft. FERRIFET

So if I understand this correctly, this is VHS footage where the tape's been removed from the cassette & re-inserted upside down, causing it to play back backward and all messed up. The artist sets this video to some noise ambiance from a previous collaboration and it hits the tone perfectly. I realize I describe a lot of music as "ominous" but oh my god this is super ominous.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

GossiTheDog OP ,

I've written up my thoughts on the Copilot Recall feature in Microsoft Copilot+ PCs

I think it will enable fraud and endanger users, and is not the sign of a company who are committed to security first.

https://doublepulsar.com/how-the-new-microsoft-recall-feature-fundamentally-undermines-windows-security-aa072829f218

GossiTheDog OP ,
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

Turns out speaking out works.

Microsoft are making significant changes to Recall, including making it specifically opt in, requiring Windows Hello face scanning to activate and use it, and actually encrypting the database.

There is obviously going to be devils in the details - potentially big ones.

Microsoft needs to commit to not trying to sneak users to enable it in the future, and it needs turning off by default in Group Policy and Intune for enterprise orgs.

Well, I'm curious now — macOS users, are you a "developer" and do you have Finder set to "show hidden files"?

mudbrick , (Bearbeitet )
@mudbrick@hachyderm.io avatar

@fasterthanlime I used to enable this setting habitually, in the hope it'd facilitate some kind of "discovery". Once or twice it did, I suppose.

After a decade and a half in macOS-land and longer still in UNIX-esque settings I'm familiar enough with where things go, and enough of a terminal-dweller that it hasn't felt worth the (small) effort do to it in a few years.

(Edited for typo)

hirozed ,
@hirozed@fosstodon.org avatar

@fasterthanlime I don’t have it set by default in Finder, but I do in Terminal. If I need to see hidden files in Finder, for example to get to the .ssh dir to add a key to an FTP app that doesn’t show it by default, I’ll hit Cmd+Shift+. and it will display. Hit the command again to hide.

My charge from last night on a 30A charger (7.2 kW at 240V).

This is why I'm always harping on the "stop installing giant charger circuits" thing! Even this is a luxury - I only charge about weekly or if I make a long trip.

For USians, a 10 gauge run of wiring will deliver 5 kW sustained. You'll only ever think that's slow if you drive a TON and/or have a really big vehicle.

Especially if you're thinking of DIYing an install, 10 gauge is so much easier to deal with.

onestar ,
@onestar@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify I absolutely appreciate all your videos on the topic. They have educated me a ton on how this all works. Besides the need for power/storage infastructure, education on EVs is paramount. It's gonna take decades to break old conceptions on how we "fill up" our cars. No one cares about fast charging their smartphone while they sleep for 8 hours at night.

hamakei ,
@hamakei@mas.to avatar

@TechConnectify We have a variable tariff where the cost per kW changes every 30 minutes based on wholesale price. So a 7kW charger might make more sense for us as it would allow us to pull as much charge as possible during the low periods.
