Can't believe they spent a gigawatt training GPT3 and the fucker isn't even trying to overthrow humanity.

Look, where I come from, if you burn a gigawatt of energy to make an AI, it had better damn well go skynet on you.

bastian ,
@bastian@digitalcourage.social avatar

@foone

just a pet peeve of mine: pointing out falsly used units

gigawatt is power. How much gigajoules can be used in one second. Just like miles per hour.

the total amount can be measured in gigawatthours. That is equivalent to drawing one gigawatt for one hour.

so they used the crazy amount of one gigawatthour. 😲

A gigawatt FOR HOW LONG?

HOLY FUCK DID THE "CORRECTING STRANGERS ON INSIGNIFICANT DETAILS IS MY WHOLE PERSONALITY" CROWD COME OUT FOR THIS. YIKES.

I, FOR ONE, THINK YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO RIG UP A SERVICEABLE TERMINATOR WITH TWO CAR BATTERIES AND A T-SHIRT GUN. WHATEVER THE GPT PEOPLE ARE DOING IS JUST BAD CRAFTSMANSHIP.

@foone i say post that as a feature request for gpt 7

angusm ,

@foone The destruction of the planet by artificial intelligence should not be just an accidental side-effect, dammit!

etchedpixels ,
@etchedpixels@mastodon.social avatar

@foone They spent a gigawatt hour training a computer to emulate a typical large consultancy business. Would have been easier just to buy part of a big consulting business.

tursilion ,
@tursilion@furries.club avatar

@foone It was trained on internet fanfics, all it knows how to do is argue with itself and fall in love with you in a very toxic way.

Variaxocellus ,
@Variaxocellus@mastorol.es avatar

@foone Alternatively, burning energy in that order of magnitude should propel you to the past while driving a retro version of a Cybertruck

pmb00cs ,
@pmb00cs@mastodon.online avatar

@foone this post is very triggering. It should really have a content warning.

Gigawatt what? Minutes? Hours? Weeks?

Gigawatt is a measure of power, not energy. But I'm fairly certain you know that, which must mean you did this on purpose just to troll all the pendants like me. Well played!

jason ,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@foone I came here for the corrections in both units and magnitude and was not disappointed.

esm ,
@esm@wetdry.world avatar

@foone at least burn 1.21 gigawatts so that the AI can go back in time and prevent all of this from ever happening

lolcat ,

@foone

Sucking up resources is evidence Skynet became self sustaining sometime around 1999, and really hit its stride by 2010 or so. GenAI is just more proof.

Power calc pedantry to follow.

https://www.washington.edu/news/2023/07/27/how-much-energy-does-chatgpt-use/

Estimated ~10gwh to train, and ~1gwh/day to run.

~500 days in operation, so ~1/2 twh consumed so far.

~25pwh annual global electric consumption.

So, < one fiftythousandth of global consumption (~0.005%).

alanthir ,

@foone At least a little bit of Hal should have been done with it, Skynet is still a pipedream!

@foone that's almost enough energy to get doc Brown shock

Doc Brown shock at the amount of power

chris ,
@chris@strafpla.net avatar

@foone A gigawatthour is just about what a Boeing or Airbus uses in fossil fuel when crossing the Atlantic ocean.
There are about 600 planes doing this trip per day. That‘s how humanity is going to be overthrown.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@chris It's still too much energy to waste on a glorified chatbot that isn't even going to kill us all!

chris ,
@chris@strafpla.net avatar

@foone Maybe if we train more chatbots - like 600 per day - they can kill us all by proxy of climate change. Would that be sufficient?

jtlg ,
@jtlg@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@foone Gigawatt hours? I think you want units of energy, rather than power.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

If you spend that much time and effort building an AI it should be less than an hour before something is on fire, several people are dead, and someone is talking about how it was wrong to tamper in God's domain.

mahryekuh ,
