Europe

9point6 , in The complete list of European news websites blocked by Russia on the 25th of June 2024

Now here I am concerned that nothing from the UK made his shit list.

Any country with a good number on this list should feel proud tbh

yemmly ,

It appears to just be EU countries on the list.

9point6 ,

Ah okay, that makes sense

TheGrandNagus ,

The post should be renamed as The incomplete list of European news websites blocked by Russia on the 25th of June 2024

Is there a list for the other continents?

AdNecrias ,

This is EU only. Not all of Europe is included even.

anzo , in [Meta] Are there people who would like to take over the moderation of this community, and manage the discussion about where to move it next?

I can help. And I'd like the community to go for feddit.org instance since this one is bound to be hacked (no updates) sooner or later.

Thank you for volunteering!

federalreverse ,

I have created it: !europe

@poVoq Would you be interested in becoming a co-moderator too?

poVoq Mod ,

As long as there are other dedicated mods, sure 😊

federalreverse ,

I am a bit scared, but I'll try.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

It's not that bad, but you need to at least skim most of the discussions as reports often fail to work due to federation issues or are only made after the comment section is a troll-party already.

Also be ready for some unpleasant DMs questioning your moderation decisions on really spurious grounds.

Flatworm7591 ,

I'll volunteer to help out with moderation. I have some spare bandwidth.

@Servais@dormi.zone avatar

Just as an observation, I'm not sure we'll get people. Good moderators are hard to find (I've been looking for some for !yurop for a long time ), and this community will probably require more work to moderate as it will have a lot of news and political discussions. After all, there's a reason poVoq was the only mod here.

How I imagine that would go:

lulztard , in Exclusive: Majority Of Voters Want Next Government To Take UK Back Into European Union

They can come back with zero special privileges, as one among equals.

GoodEye8 ,

This is exactly why I don't think they're coming back just yet. If there's one thing leavers and remainers agreed on it's british exceptionalism. Remainers didn't want to leave because EU in general was beneficial, remainers didn't want to leave because UK had a good thing going in the EU and giving it up was stupid. Remainers want to join only if they get at least some of their special privileges back.

Maybe in another 10 years they'll be more receptive towards joining without special privileges.

rmuk ,

I'm ready now. Fuck sterling, fuck the vetos, fuck the opt-outs, etc. Yeah, the special arrangement we had was amazing and put us in a privileged position and we'll be diminished if we rejoin without them, but that's still a far better situation than we find ourselves in now. So yeah, warts and all; I'm in.

We should have gone full metric and adopted the Euro years ago. Then all this bollocks about pints and good old sterling would have been done with.
As usual with UK we do everything half arsed and settle for second best.

passepartout , in [Meta] It seems that feddit.de communities are moving to feddit.org, is it going to be the plan for this one too?

The size of this community alone shows the need for it. That said, feddit.org seems like a good new home for it since .org is a language neutral tld and the server is german AND English speaking after all.

The EU Council approved a ban on June 24 on access within the bloc to four key Russian state-run or controlled media outlets effective the next day (June 25):

  1. Rossiyskaya Gazeta
  2. Voice of Europe
  3. RIA Novosti
  4. Izvestiya.

The EU already banned other Russian propaganda outlets before, such as RT and Sputnik.

petrescatraian , in [Meta] It seems that feddit.de communities are moving to feddit.org, is it going to be the plan for this one too?
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

It would actually be kinda cool to have something like a feddit.eu server where communities from all across Europe/the EU can reside. But I am not against a move to .org either, except for the fact that they label themselves an English-German speaking community. I am not German. 😁

EvilCartyen ,

feddit.eu seems to be a one-person abandoned instance. To me, feddit.org seems like a fine place.

There's also !europe - but it seems to be exclusively francophone.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@EvilCartyen wow, does this thing actually exist? Lol

Servais OP ,
@Servais@dormi.zone avatar

There’s also !europe - but it seems to be exclusively francophone.

It is, the same way !europa was German speaking

EvilCartyen ,

Yes, and like feddit.dk is Danish-speaking. These language-specific instances make sense, and ideally we'd have a different instance for international communities like a europe-community. But, you know, beggars can't be choosers and so it seems like we need to make a suboptimal choice :)

Servais OP ,
@Servais@dormi.zone avatar

I am not sure I got your comment right

Lemm.ee is an English speaking European instance that could host the !Europe instance.

It is different in that regard compared to feddit.dk, feddit.org, feddit.UK, jlai.lu, feddit.org, I don't think there is even an Estonian speaking community on Lemm.ee

All of the other instances named in the previous paragraph have a focus on their local language, lemm.ee does not.

EvilCartyen ,

I suppose :) I just like feddit.org - as a name - better than lemm.ee - but that's just my preference.

I suggest the mod of this community makes a decision and we do that.

Even if that's true (and it probably is, because it was a pretty thin majority to exit in the first place) it would be absolute political suicide to go into this election on the promise of getting us back in.

The anti EU brigade are lunatics and people who voted leave are easily lead. The last thing we need is "Look, they're ignoring your will!" followed by Emperor Farage...

nova_ad_vitum , (Bearbeitet )

It's a completely moot point for another reason. The EU isn't just going to let them back in with the same sweetheart deal they got as founding members. That alone means this won't happen for decades if at all .

crispy_kilt ,

I mean, they could just join on the same conditions as everyone else

nova_ad_vitum ,

That will never fly with the public , especially since one of the "normal" conditions is giving up the pound, joining the Euro, and giving up direct control of their monetary policy. There is no way a majority would support that in the UK . None of these polls will even bother asking something like that. The polls are about whether they want to turn back time to before Brexit, which is somewhat interesting but isn't possible.

rbos ,
@rbos@lemmy.ca avatar

I assume the UK would be obligated to adopt the Euro as a currency, and i have no doubt some people would absolutely rage stroke.

Klear ,

Sounds fun, if unviable.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In ,

I don't think that is essential for trade. A Norwegian/ Icelandic/ Swiss etc. approach could be adopted.

Blackmist ,

EEA does allow free movement of people though, which is most of what made us leave to start with. Mostly because of this prick pretending that hordes of dirty brown refugees were somehow the fault of that.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In ,

Yeah. If free movement of people is excluded you are down to a European Union–Turkey Customs Union type agreement.

Tiptopit ,

Would be kind of funny if the reverse of Brexit happened. Have some pro Europe lunatics take over the fight and make a brexiteer accept the worst deal to re-enter the union.
