Happy to hear if you can substantiate that claim in regards to rule 3 of this community. No sarcasm, I am currently unaware about the background of this "Merics" think tank.

While I agree that the OP is very selective in what they post, I don't quite agree that this institute is a misinformation source.

After researching them a bit now, they seem to be a relatively independent source funded by a German billionaire family that got rich with a grocery chain.

They seems to be relatively progressive and have an explicit pro Muslim integration stance which seems to have resulted in this institute publishing about the discrimination of Uyghurs in China, which drew the negative attention of the Chinese government.

Ugh... they need to be careful who to make friends with. Neither Rio Tinto nor the current Serbian president are ones you would normally want to be associated with and apparently the mining project is highly opposed by civil society in Serbia. This "pact" seems to do nothing to resolve the issues identified by environmentalists and previously highlighted by protestors either.

Expensive and unnecessary service contracts benefiting large consultancy firms (that happen to employ her children) and shady backdoor deals with pharmaceutical companies during the pandemic. Run of the mill large scale legal corruption basically, but her entire party is known for that.

Up to you. I personally don't find it that bad and people too lazy to read the article seem to be too lazy to read the bot summaries as well...

If you want to mine it, you definitely don't want to bring it down into a gravity well first.

European Parliament lawmakers call on EU to strip Hungary of voting rights over PM Viktor Orban's recent visits to Moscow and Beijing ( www.reuters.com ) Englisch

A group of 63 European Parliament lawmakers has asked the EU to withdraw Hungary's voting rights in the bloc, in response to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's recent visits to Moscow and Beijing....

The EU needs to discuss about the veto process in view on Hungary, but this is stupid and undemocratic.

Ah, that's what I feared. And I can't really blame them for it, too high litigation risk and they might end up having to pay those shitty companies compensation for lost profits or some non-sense like that.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Article indeed lacks details, but my guess would be that they bought the company in 2019 and loaded it with the bank debt from that purchase expecting that in a growing market and low interest rates the company would be able to pay back their own purchase.

But now a few years later, with more competition diminishing profits and higher than before interest rates on the loans, and suddenly it looks much less possible. Obviously Sonne will not admit to this, but such shady practises are sadly very common for company takeovers.

Given how their election system works, it might very well be that the left alliance wins most seats. I guess we will know soon.

Anyone know what the freed up radio spectrum will be used for?

Last time I drove a rental Ford it was an endless amount of random ding-dings and dangerous interference with steering. Maybe you get used to it after a while, but I found it extremely annoying.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Some of the others high up on that list are equally absurd. OK, Zürich and Geneva are maybe nice if you are a millionaire, but for everyone else they are absolutely unaffordable.

poVoq OP Mod ,

It's just not cost competitive at all anymore.

One can argue about having a disposable second stage (like Falcon-9) vs. full re-usability (like the upcoming Starship), as the latter is not very efficient fuel wise. But not having a reusable first stage just makes it way too expensive to be able to compete in the currently market dominated by the Falcon-9.

poVoq OP ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah, it's fun and quite convenient.

@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

It probably isn't the best use of the city's funds, but given the specific geography of the city, using the space above the river that runs along the entire narrow valley that makes up most of Wuppertal, it does make some sense.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Will probably be again this malicious compliance of "only if you mail-order this 799€ tool for it" 😒 Oh and the battery itself costs more then the phone itself is still worth and of course no 3rd party batteries work.

Far-right leader Le Pen questions French president's role as army chief ( www.france24.com ) Englisch

Incidence does not mean "beating up" someone. Spray painting "stop the genocide in Gaza" is sometimes counted as an "antisemitic incidence" in Germany.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I specifically responded to your last sentence. If you are OK with for example Israel in the UN recognised borders of 1947, then you don't deny the right of the state of Israel to exist, which is all that is being asked for.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

It is quite reductive to say anti-zionism is just denying the right of Israel to exist. Yes, the state of Israel is a deeply zionist project but you can accept the reality of this state existing and still be opposed to the idea of zionism in general.

I am opposed to the idea of colonialism in general but still accept the existence of states with a colonial history.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Fine, you are of course technically correct 🙄
