you know what'd be a cool feature for an image editor?
"export last action as code"

where it looks at the last thing in the undo/redo buffer, and saves it out as a program (in C/C++/whateverscripting) that uses an ImageEditorLibrary to do the same thing

b4ux1t3 ,
@b4ux1t3@hachyderm.io avatar

@foone yes. Just.... Yes.

Like, I've literally done this manually before, by going through the source code for both gimp and krita to figure out how they did specific things that I tried.

It takes hours, because of course it does!

jkerhin ,
@jkerhin@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone while calling it an image editor is quite a stretch, MATLAB totally does this. Be careful what you wish for though, the code it autogenerates is... not what a human would write, to put it mildly.

The way sentences containing the German character ß get longer when uppercased was specially designed to create memory problems in C programs doing string handling

_nd_ ,
@_nd_@fnordon.de avatar

@foone I was part of an upgrade project where program parts written in C was moved to Java. The DB layer of the program used two columns VARCHAR(n) for text - one as-is, and one in upper case for indices; both with the same n. The client truncated the string.
The upgrade was a long project and tested extensively, but on the day of the go live the DB connection suddenly hang.
Reason: Java did The Right Thing and converted ß → SS, and the DB interface didn't deal well with too long strings.

@foone That was actually the cause of a bug I spent way too long time finding. 😂 I even wrote a blog post about it.

@foone I'm guessing it was a pandemic "fever detection" cash grab and they could charge whatever they wanted for it so faster > cheaper.

I looked at similar units for my employer and they were asking between 500-1500 for them.

We passed and bought a cheap forehead thermometer instead.

Idea: the Doom Army Knife.
It's an arm SBC with multiple types of lvds output and parallel RGB, plus a bunch of GPIO for inputs.

The idea is that it's designed for splicing into a devices existing screen and buttons, and producing a Doom-playing device

Why is the Bart diesel? Do they not have electricity in the bay area?

ids1024 ,
@ids1024@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone You may be underestimating how weird the diesel part is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBART extends an existing BART line with 9.1 miles of track, using diesel trains and standard gauge track. It has just a transfer station and two new stations. This was not existing track or anything, it was built specifically to extend an existing line, because it's apparently cheaper than electrifying a 9 mile extension?

Want to go from "Pitsburg / Bay Point" to "Pitsburg Center"? One stop, but change train.

brouhaha ,
@brouhaha@mastodon.social avatar

@foone Are you asking about the Antioch line, or some other new stuff? The original BART lines are third-rail electric, which is why they can't have any at-grade crossings. Unless something has seriously changed in the dozen years I've been away.
