I was driving around SF today and I saw a Tesla with an emoji license plate.
Now, the CA DMV isn't gonna let you do that, so how did they have an emoji license plate?
Simple! They put the codepoint!
The license plate was U-1F916.

Anyone know an easy way to show a full screen image in windows 95?
I thought I could use mspaint but it turns out it adds a 1px border in full-screen mode.

I could write a simple win32 app but that seems like a lot of work for something this simple

I used ACDSee back in the day, but that was decades ago.

@foone iirc pygame (the python library) allows opening/creating a full screen window in just a few lines of code

still requires writing a program technically, but at least it's prolly easier than some other options that do

@foone You would get a warning any time you used the back, forward or reload button though.

Not gloating though, I once made a shitpost website with actual stripe integration without properly knowing how postbacks worked, or enough math to make an "add payment fees to total" checkbox work.

There's an alternate universe where Netscape Navigator embedded Lua instead of inventing js, and I'm not sure if that's a better world or not.

suetanvil ,
@suetanvil@freeradical.zone avatar

@foone

Having spent far too much of my life overthinking this, I will now share:

  1. Lua hadn't really made it to North America by 1995; the go-to extension language at the time was Tcl or a Lisp dialect. (Perl was an option but not really suited to embedding, and Python was this new thing nobody used.)

  2. Java was THE HYPE in 1994; JS has its syntax because management wanted that similarity.

So the obvious design for JS is OOP Lisp with C syntax. And that's what we got, only bad.

yujiri ,
@yujiri@freeradical.zone avatar

@foone my guess is it's slightly better

You can just plug in arcade buttons or whatever to each pair of pins.

arch linux is the best propaganda for using windows that I've ever seen

eppie ,
@eppie@furries.club avatar

@foone I have Arch installed on my main pc. I did it manually. It sucked lmao, but I actually really like it now that it's set up. If I were to have to do it again I'd probably use Endeavour OS, which is just Arch with a graphical installer like how every other distro has. But for my server pc, I use Debian so I don't have to touch it very often. On my grandma and aunt's desktop I have installed Vanilla OS, so that way it physically can't be broken (it's an immutable Debian distro)

The Roman empire fell because their Roman numerals weren't a form of positional notation, so they couldn't figure out binary. Their computers were terrible.

60sRefugee ,
@60sRefugee@spacey.space avatar

@foone Maybe not; merchants using scales figured out early that a set of binary weights (base weight then each is double the previous) could be combined to any value up to 2x-1 where x was the largest weight. Now if some genius had figured out a way to combine this with an abacus...

A fun side effect of being anosmic is that sometimes I think I smell something, but it's just the nasal equivalent of phantom limb.
The best part about this is that because the smells I'm supposedly smelling aren't real, my brain doesn't seem to think they should be limited to things that would make sense to smell; you know, physical objects with distinct odors.

I just smelled slackware.

Pyxaron ,
@Pyxaron@dragonchat.org avatar

@foone My brain loves to do that to me all the time.

What makes it even more ridiculous is that it'll map a "smell" to things that do not have one, but it'll map it to things like "a blend of exhaustion, CRT monitor with a distorted line slowly scrolling up and concrete floor", which is apparently now a scent.

It's a bit like BSODs have a taste for me, as in, it's mapped to "taste" for some reason, but it's not a valid flavor. It'll make whatever i'm drinking taste off for a moment tho!

when I finally build my Workbench Keyboard, one of the weirder options I'm going to add is a way to paste pre-loaded text files from the onboard storage.

like you could have texts\serials\windows\win10.txt and you navigate to the that file and hit paste and it just types out the FCKGW- nonsense for you

Fun fact about microfiche:
One of the first uses of it was due to pigeons.

During the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, Paris was under siege and they got dispaches out by using microphotography to make them small enough that they could be attached to pigeons and flown out of the city.
