I think a lot of time when the Torment Nexus thing is brought up, people are getting the arrow of causality the wrong way around. It's not that necessarily that Bobby Techbro read "Don't Create the Torment Nexus" and was inspired to make one, even if that's what the marketing tries to sell it as.

No I think that's not giving scifi authors the proper respect as futurists. They looked at how things were going and thought "man, this might lead to a Torment Nexus" and then wrote a story about that.

ids1024 ,
@ids1024@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone This is definitely true.

Though also, if people are naming their companies things like "Soylent" and "Palantir", they do seem to be somewhat influenced by fiction. And getting the wrong message.

@scottmichaud Important household tip: always keep your exploding and non exploding keyboards in separate containers: properly labeled, secured and fire proofed.

It's annoying when people complain that my content is "too eurocentric". And after making my Shinjuku station video a lot of people are saying that "finally" there's some "non-eurocentric" content. 🙄

I make videos about MY experiences in cities. I don't summarize a bunch of facts you could easily find on Wikipedia, Twitter, or news articles, and then lazily recite it over stock footage.

I actually GO to places, experience them in person, and over 90% of my videos is footage I filmed myself.

ids1024 ,

@notjustbikes Somehow I suspect the people complaining about "eurocentrism" would also ignore cities in Latin America and Africa.

I found an amazon listing that is for an "HD DVD player"

by which they mean a DVD player that supports HD output, because it's an upscaler.

YALL KNOW HD-DVD IS A DIFFERENT THING, RIGHT?

ids1024 ,
@ids1024@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone Obviously "HD DVD" is an entirely different thing from "HD-DVD".

Someone needs to create an "HD+DVD" to round things out.

Terrible idea: an author writes a book, but instead of releasing it, they train an LLM on it, and release the model.

So readers can ask the LLM to generate text based on it, but can never know the original text.

@foone You can also imagine this inadvertently becoming the only record of some work, in some distant future.

Alien archaeologists: "Our records show that in the late days of human civilization, before the Antimatter Wars of the 2050s, the works of a bard named "Tolkien" were popular. But after the war Great Copyright Enforcement Purge of the libraries, and the war, all we have are excerpts, ritualistic graphics called 'memes' and one language model that produces in-universe erotic literature."

The whole point of the "paperless office" wasn't to cut down on paper, exactly. It was misnamed.

It's actually a printerless office. If we can be paperless, we can finally be printerless.

@foone "The paperless office thing didn't work out, so we're now a fountain pen and Spencerian cursive office."

As Samuel Butler tells us, "Every machine of every sort should be destroyed by the well-wisher of his species. Let there be no exceptions made, no quarter shown; let us at once go back to the primeval condition of the race."

Neuralink to implant 2nd human with brain chip as 75% of threads retract in 1st

Algorithm tweaks made up for the loss, and Neuralink thinks it has fix for next patient.

@arstechnica Have they released any information yet about their implants being able to do anything other than control a mouse cursor?

Controlling a mouse cursor with your mind has been possible for decades now, without implanting anything, so even if their implants are safe and effective, they'd need to do a lot more to really be impressive.

I wonder how hard it would be to introduce intentionally faulty memory to QEMU, to emulate what happens when bits flip

ids1024 ,
@ids1024@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone Looks like you can used options like memory-backend-file to make qemu use shared memory for all of the VM's memory? Then you should be able to mutilate the memory from another process?

Why is the Bart diesel? Do they not have electricity in the bay area?

ids1024 ,
@ids1024@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone You may be underestimating how weird the diesel part is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBART extends an existing BART line with 9.1 miles of track, using diesel trains and standard gauge track. It has just a transfer station and two new stations. This was not existing track or anything, it was built specifically to extend an existing line, because it's apparently cheaper than electrifying a 9 mile extension?

Want to go from "Pitsburg / Bay Point" to "Pitsburg Center"? One stop, but change train.
