Personally I think programming languages should always be uppercase or always be lowercase. No proper noun programming languages.
It's python and ruby, not Python and Ruby.
It's C and APL, not c and definitely not Apl.

Swift and Java? Wrong. Bad programming languages. Make SWIFT an acronym and understand java is a programming language and Java™ is a product

@nonnihil I think you hit the nail on the head with the interpreted vs compiled. That's probably EXACTLY why it's like this in my head.

I'm writing rust without fully understanding the language. Pray for me.

Actually I guess that's true of most language I program in? Like, I'm sure there's some obscure python syntax or behavior I can't remember, despite calling myself a python programmer and having done it professionally for many years.

but my point was more that I barely know any rust. there's entire parts of syntax I don't understand yet. but I'm coding anyway!

I just realized I KINDA wrote a language where parsing file A requires also parsing every other file in the directory, and parsing those files might require parsing file A first.

my favorite thing is hacking a game and then going and looking on the company's mobygames page to see what else they did around the same time and then grepping that ROM to see if it is the same engine... and it is.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I asked someone with a fullset of GBA roms to run some greps and they found three more:

  • The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning
  • Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue
  • Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan

Fun fact about PII:
People in the US military have a number but often they could use their social security number interchangeably. And it was common enough for forms to require one or the other that it just became standard procedure at one point to basically sign your name "FirstName LastName ###-##-####".

This was stopped eventually, but the National Climatic Data Center has /millions/ of pages of paper records of weather data with SSNs written on them.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@transbian_arsonists @thebluewizard that's exactly how they were doing it. Sadly, after 2011, as far as I know they stopped (congressional budget drama) and I don't think they ever restarted. So all those records are simply not digitized and may never be

Interesting reusability designed into this Sony remote.
The front metal bit looks like this.
but the plastic is just a bunch of generic holes which can have sliders placed/not placed at different locations.

The inside of the same remote. The buttons are laid out in a grid, and there's holes for every possible button placement, but unused placements don't have sliders in them

byteborg ,

Sony was on top of the world in mass-manufacturing. Their designs from the 80s/90s are so good in terms of ease of manufacture and ease of use.

Gazoche ,
@Gazoche@mastodon.au avatar

@foone I remember a friend showing me that his remote had a "secret" button. There was no hole for it in the shell but the button was there on the PCB if you opened the remote. And it was functional! I think it enabled extra bass boosting or something like that. The manufacturer probably had a higher-end model that had that feature and they just "disabled" it on the lower-end model by hiding the button inside the shell.

@foone I got a couple of A2 Canvas Go cards from Kingston. With all the icons the cards look like souped up rally cars, and I don't understand at least half of them.

I don't care as long as they work on my SBCs, and they are snappy as roadrunner when compared to other, older microSD cards I have.

I got what I wanted to get, so I'm happy.
