Get a laptip with a real hardware switch for the cam and the mic. Best peace of mind knowing that they're really off. Neither tape, nor the non-electrical built-in plastic sliders do that.
The problem with those is that it's often just a piece of plastic, so the microphone isn't cut off from power. The webcam sees noching, but sound is unaffected.
They don't neccessarily need to, you can pretty much always just look at reviews. Now you can make a point about trusting reviewers, but all that is still better than trusting the manufacturer or microsoft.
You're right though, there is trust involved, but only if you don't verify things yourself.
Thing is, they would've probably gained even more votes if they didn't incur so many scandals recently. People will probably forget about those until the next national elections
The Ampel may have gained control over the government at the worst possible time. Everything is currently shit and people always blame the government, even though some of that is not under their control, which currently places blame on the only three important center-left parties. Thus people turn right.
You can still vote with your wallet. Don't drive your car unless absolutely neccessary, don't use anything 'cloud' or 'AI' and pressure companies on social media to watch their emissions.
Absolutely, but unless you're on a rolling release, it still won't be that long. For example, my homelab ubuntu server didn't get updated for over a month, but when I finally did run updates it finished after no more than a minute.
Depends a bit on hardware and network speed though.
My Computers are all reasonably modern and decetly spec'd, resources should not be an issue. Ubuntu also ships with a lot more pre-installed packages than tumbleweed does, but I get your point.
I've been using Ubuntu for about 3, years now on the desktop and I don't know what you're talking about. Where exactly is that prompt?
And they're not hiding updates behind pro, it's just extra on top of the updates you'd get on other distros.
Does what? Sign up for ubuntu pro? For that you just need to go to their website and register. For the homelab stuff you could start small - maybe a linux nas with a few VMs for a pihole or something.

There was backlash, they removed it and never tried anything similar since. But I'm with you on that, the idea was insane and if they pull anything like that again, I'll be switching away from ubuntu immediatly.
But that delay in opening is only for the very first time after installation, it does not affect any subsequent app starts, even after you reboot. In real world performance, snaps are basically just as fast as any normal app in my experience. And you need to keep in mind what the idea behind ubuntu is - they want it to be useful to experienced users as well as newbies and tech-illiterates. Snap automatic updates are honestly really nice if you don't want to think about updates and canonical have done a lot of work to make the experience as smooth as possible, and the sandbox is a nice bit of added security. They are very versatile too, allowing any type of software to be a snap, from little terminal tools to full-featured nextcloud instances
Ich bin glaub ich echt der Einzige, der sich auf run0 freut. Mit sudo hab ich zwar an sich kein Problem, aber systemd-run ist so schon recht nützlich und sytemd an sich erleichtert mir die Arbeit normalerweise
Don't really need sandboxed software for that. Ubuntu comes with their own software store and even if you only select deb, you just klick on install and you're done
I work in IT and endpoint management is among my tasks. Knowing the things we can do to smartphones that are controlled by our mdm is enough to where I would never agree to having thatopn my personal device. I even refused to get a company provided smartphone.
The point is not that you can audit it yourself, it's that SOMEBODY can audit it and then tell everybody about it. Only a single person needs to find an exploit and tell the community about it for that exploit to get closed.
