Debian used to be so good. What happened!? ( lemmy.world )

Firefox on Debian stable is so old that websites yell at you to upgrade to a newer browser. And last time I tried installing Debian testing (or was it debian unstable?), the installer shat itself trying to make the bootloader. After I got it to boot, apt refused to work because of a missing symlink to busybox. Why on earth do...

Petter1 ,

Good distros:

  1. Frdora -> noob
  2. opensuse TW -> "it should just work, but roll“
  3. endeavourOS -> "I want yay but too lazy for Arch"
  4. Arch -> "I only want pkg I have chosen"
  5. Gentoo -> "I have too much Time"

Agree?

Petter1 ,

According to /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/home.conf, /srv might end up nuked too.

Nice. 🤣

Petter1 ,

Im in the middle, 4 times a day 😂 what distro?

Petter1 ,

Ohh 🤣 yea, i meant the one on the left bot middle 🙈

Updating my Linux is my main task on my Linux 😜 guess I have to look into kernel development

Petter1 ,

Inlove it 😁 it is, until now, the least tume consuming distro I tried! Lnstalling it all using yay is just soo nice (I use it with KDE right now, but I think I will get into tailing WM soon.

Hyperland seems to look very nice, but I heard, that the Community is a bit tocic, so I think I‘ll first test Sway

Petter1 ,

I just learned yesterday, that you have to switch vulkan packages (including lib32 version) if you switch to proprietary nvidia driver 😂 only to learn that I don’t have enough RAM for cyberpunk, after it finally started..

2x16gb is on its way 🥳

Petter1 ,

It is going to be better in the future 😁

Petter1 ,

I found out by checking installed packages using yay vulkan and saw that vulkan-nouveau (and lib32 version) where installed and lib32-nvidia-utils where missing (nvidia utils was installed)
Installed lib32-nvidia-utils, removed both nouveau vulkan packages and clean dependencies using yay -Yc
After reboot, it was working.

On KDE you can check vulkan in the tool that is linked in the about page in the settings. But maybe only 64bit version, steam uses 32bit.

Reference:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Vulkan

Petter1 ,

Which should be rather soon I suppose, anyway…

Endeavor is nice, btw

Petter1 ,

Most distros use systemd to manage deamons (mini apps that run in background / sevices) like e.g. Bluetooth.

(those stuff you have to enable sometimes (systemctl enable my-new-app.service)

You can use systemd-manager to check it out using a GUI

This meme tells „imagine if windows would port Systemd to windows. Winsvc stands for Windows Service

Petter1 ,

😮did not know that

Petter1 ,

It is old, but it does not look bad in my opinion 😁 it is such a good overview, I don‘t know why KDE does not include it in its settings

  • Petter1 ,

Set up adobe account access , so you don't have the hassle with numbers, only a click on the notification of the account access app.

    Petter1 ,

I‘d expect a music service to be installed on many devices only allowing x numbers of streams. At least Apple Music is like that.

    Petter1 ,

    I love gimp

    Petter1 ,

You never get to that problem if all your data is in your debian server 🤓 like that you can hop around distros on your main, like a rabbit 🐇 💨

    Petter1 ,

I know a lot of noobs installing random .deb on their devian based distros not knowing how to add sources to apt (only those are added where the app developer has command by command tutorial), well to say it shortly, a mess.
With arch there is just yay and you find everything 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Petter1 ,

Why use arch based distro if enabling AUR breaks it in no time?

    Petter1 ,

Imagine using an arch based distro that dies on try using the AUR lol, why even bother?

    Petter1 ,

Well it died on me twice and then I gave up 😂

    Petter1 ,

Never happened to me again since I use Arch and endeavorOS 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Petter1 ,

    Which card do you possess?

    Petter1 ,

For me "next" October and "this" October are the same, lol

The next October I see is in 2024…

Maybe I am strange, but i‘d say October next year to avoid misunderstandings

    Petter1 ,

I‘d recommend endeavorOS, because I like installing from AUR using yay more than installing from https://software.opensuse.org/

But if you don’t like the terminal, go for OpenSuse.

    Petter1 ,

    Even more precise 💪🏻

    Petter1 ,

    🤔that should work with wayland..

    Petter1 ,

I found the best working linux for me is endeavorOS, which istalls Arch and package manager yay
If you want to install anything just write yay „anything“ and choose what to install from the list (google „aur „answer to anything“ „ to check which answer is the app you want)
For installing proprietary NVIDIA drivers, there is a tool preinstalled (have to google the name) if you really want.

    Petter1 ,

Steam has great Linux support and can run even non steam windows apps through proton
I have not tested overwatch, but you can launch battle.net through steam if you add the exe to your steam library and force proton in the game properties

Edit: just use the app lutris to install battle.net, seems to be the even more easy route

And check out the linuxGaming community

    Petter1 ,

Ahh, the time of streaming xvid codec and having divX video player everywhere 😂 good old times

    Petter1 ,

When you habe so many children that you don’t know any more names and start numbering them using PIDs

    Petter1 ,

Bought just rightclick the app and choose open there, instead of double-click, then you have a open button in the unsigned code warning window
