Born tired. Likes bikes and hikes. Sometimes I work on Open Source software. Other times I work on robots. I remember when computers were good. He/him.

Did you alt text your image? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

wait what if you use a GPL'd art design for a tattoo?

swelljoe ,
@swelljoe@mas.to avatar

@foone what constitutes "distributing" a tattoo? Because that's where the license kicks in with GPL.

I just was thinking that my mouse wasn't tracking very well and automatically flipped it over so I could try cleaning the ball.

it's 2024, of course it doesn't have a ball, this is an optical mouse!

but apparently my computer reflexes are stuck in 1996

swelljoe ,
@swelljoe@mas.to avatar

@foone I recently switched to a trackball. The first time it got weird because of dust and stuff mucking it up it took me an embarrassingly long time to think to clean the...umm...nest? whatever you call where the ball sits.

This is what I see when people show off their 40% keyboards:

@foone I tried an 84-key, and that was bad, so I went up to a compact 100-key...still too cramped, I kept fat-fingering the keys around escape and delete. Now I have a 106-key (plus knob) and I still want more keys. Gimme Big Keyboard.

I somehow managed to break Visual Studio so that it can't render text in source code.

Everything else seems to work fine, but if you click on a .cpp file, it just shows you a blank window.

Ok gang, say you're stuck on a plane for 20 hours, what YouTube video do you take with you?

swelljoe ,
@swelljoe@mas.to avatar

@fasterthanlime if you're interested in music, this is one of my favorite videos about..."music theory", I guess? Adam Neely has many great ones, but this is the one I've recommended the most. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr3quGh7pJA

Ah. I see.

@swelljoe@mas.to avatar

@fasterthanlime I gotta say, putting ARIA attributes on it without there being any readable text or semantic meaning is a real 🖕

swelljoe ,
@swelljoe@mas.to avatar

@fasterthanlime "hydration" in reference to a website makes me a bit nauseous. I assume that's the deal here, they built a bunch of client-side garbage in JavaScript and then fetch some data via JSON or GraphQL or whatever complicated job security system they're using to actually make it readable to a human...and that part broke (as expected, it's probably a big pile of uncategorized shit in MongoDB). I might be projecting here, but...symptoms fit.

Microsoft ties executive pay to security following multiple failures and breaches

Microsoft has been criticized for "preventable" failures and poor communication.

@arstechnica I remember when Microsoft was probably the worst major OS vendor for security, and then I remember when they were arguably the best major OS vendor for security. Paperclip maximizers are now in charge at Microsoft, Google, and Apple, so it's a race to the bottom, in terms of who can make the buggiest and most spyware-infested and adware-filled OS that gets worse with every release (Microsoft probably leading, Google is putting in work, though, nobody beats their surveillance game).

Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles

Tesla is also getting rid of its public policy team, despite robotaxi ambitions.

@arstechnica behold, the big genius has had another idea. The market is slow to figure out that they've bet on a hyped loser, but it'll figure it out eventually. "Reduce headcount" is a popular move among the Wall Street set, but also indicates short-sighted desperation. Nothing left to do but cut costs and ride the corpse down slowly.

I just got a cold call from another country because someone wanted to buy my minecraft account

the future is weird

swelljoe ,
@swelljoe@mas.to avatar

@foone to what nefarious purpose do people put old Minecraft accounts? I mean, it's obviously for some kind of scam, but I can't figure out what scam someone would do in Minecraft. (I have never played, so I'm wholly ignorant of the seedier side of the game.)
