@notjustbikes you might find this funny: https://www.youtube.com/watch/hwWwMBjRA7M — they call it ‘safer pedestrian crossings’

@mia lol this is why I don't watch urbanist content made by Americans.

They have no idea what they're talking about and their total lack of knowledge of anything outside of America means they don't even know how wrong they are. 😂

A stat I found interesting is that meat consumption / person is falling steadily in Germany, down 15% in the last 5 years while the meat replacement industry is booming. Sadly much of the rest of the world is going in the opposite direction.

(sorry for the Hungarian text, but the graphs should be pretty self explanatory)

@Techaltar the same trend has been happening in the Netherlands. And I've noticed since we moved here that the meat-free section of the grocery store is over twice as big and is also more prominently displayed.

I barely eat meat anymore because I genuinely prefer the alternatives. Like Beyond Meat burgers are way less greasy and they're even available at fast food joints.

I have to assume the worldwide trend is from people being lifted out of poverty who can finally eat meat more often.

Listening to UrbanistAgenda when you talk about a scary future of suburban poverty, as cities get desirable and 'gentrify'. Living in Scarborough (Ontario) I think it's not exactly distant future. TTC is the lifeline my neighbours cling to, and the majority live in highrises, many of which have no nearby amenities.

Got a video coming about that suburban/urban rich/poor flip?

notjustbikes , (Bearbeitet )
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@triddles no, I'm not planning a video about this anytime soon, but Strong Towns talks about this a lot:

https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/tag/suburban+poverty

Maybe I should have an expert on the Urbanist Agenda to talk about it.

If you live or work in Amsterdam then I recommend that you fill out this survey being done by the gemeente about making space for walking, cycling, public transit, taxis, and driving:

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@quixoticgeek @mcv did you watch the video with the instructions? You can't move too many sliders to the right.

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@quixoticgeek @mcv surveys like this need to have limitations because otherwise they result in useless responses.

I've been involved in surveys like this before, and if they're open ended when people just crank all the sliders to the maximum and it doesn't mean anything.

I think the UI could be better, but it's good that this survey actually forces people to think about how much space is required and how difficult each decision is.

@notjustbikes Just got back from two weeks in Italy. Spent less time in cars (two taxi rides) than I'd spent in years. High speed rail, local rail, subways, light rail and buses, and they were all great. The only thing I didn't take was a bike share ride.

The weirdest part is that the light rail sound from your videos has somehow become very comforting. When I heard the near identical sound from a light rail car in Florence, it sounded ridiculously 'right'.

Fully orange pilled, it seems.

notjustbikes ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@mkellis nice! Sounds like a great trip.

If I can make people feel comfortable from the sound of a tram then I know I've sound of a tram then I'm definitely doing something right! 😉

Read this at my funeral.

For nearly all of my life, I've known how I was going to die. Not from cancer, or diet, or drink, but by being crushed under a car. I will be mangled and bleed out painfully. The driver, distracted on their phone, will say that I "came out of nowhere". The police and the DA will call it an "accident". There will be no consequences of any kind. Except for my death, of course. [...]

@jwz this was exactly our reality when we lived in Toronto, but once our kids became old enough to ride a bike it was too much for us.

This was one of the top reasons we left Canada and moved to the Netherlands.

I've talked about this in several videos, in particular this one:

First you get orangepilled by @notjustbikes and others, then you get to know @CargoBikeDaddy and soon you own a bakfiets...

Our Carrie arrived today, can"t wait to take her for a longer test ride and some shopping tomorrow.

@notjustbikes don’t know if you mentioned this before in one of your videos, but apparently Spain has introduced 30km/h speed limits on most urban single lane roads back in 2021, decreasing the number of traffic deaths considerably. I’m in Salamanca now and it seems to be working fine, most drivers stick to the rules and 30km is also the speed limit on most double lane roads in the city. https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/speed-limits-towns-20220517101946-nt.html

notjustbikes ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@hayify surprisingly that didn't come up in any of my research on 30kmph cities, but it's great to see!

I think like most thing urban planning, switching to 30kmph speed limits gets a lot of pushback, but when it's actually implemented things go fine and the majority of people like it.

Japan has some truly crazy trains, so while I was there I tried to ride a bunch of them.

Here are six of my favourites! The Pokémon one was insane!

@petrescatraian I don't have any plans to visit the Balkans at this time, but if I do, I need to have a reason to visit.

Nobody wants to watch a video where I complain about all the things wrong with a place they've never been to. I would prefer to focus on something that is done well, and then mention some of the things they could do better.

@erikh I have no interest in that. I know the US sucks.

Honestly, I'm tired of even talking about it. Online urbanist content is way too oversaturated by American content.

@erikh I'm happy to see more content, I'm just totally sick of hearing about the US.
