I don't love bikes, but I ride one for transport.

Why?

I want my city to be more tranquil, with fewer multi-ton machines moving around. I want to hear natural sounds instead of engines, exhaust, or tires on pavement. I want to contribute to the kind of environment I want to live in.

That’s it.

We were brainstorming for a name for the deadly speed inducing roundabouts NA loves to build and we found one : a carnado
If one of you ever makes a video mentioning them I'd love to hear that name, not just because it's funny but a good catchy and a self explaining name is a formidable advocacy tool

reply by @therealergo: How about a "car tornado" reply by @book_1312 : THE CARNADO I love it, not likely to end up as official as stroad, but it's is a very catchy advocacy term reply by @bryanculbertson : Roundabouts intended for speeding cars are officially called a "Carnado" in my book now

Electric cars aren't here to save the world, they're here to save the auto industry.

The Swiss Federal Railway gets it. 😉👇

@notjustbikes Just got back from two weeks in Italy. Spent less time in cars (two taxi rides) than I'd spent in years. High speed rail, local rail, subways, light rail and buses, and they were all great. The only thing I didn't take was a bike share ride.

The weirdest part is that the light rail sound from your videos has somehow become very comforting. When I heard the near identical sound from a light rail car in Florence, it sounded ridiculously 'right'.

    Fully orange pilled, it seems.

    Read this at my funeral.

For nearly all of my life, I've known how I was going to die. Not from cancer, or diet, or drink, but by being crushed under a car. I will be mangled and bleed out painfully. The driver, distracted on their phone, will say that I "came out of nowhere". The police and the DA will call it an "accident". There will be no consequences of any kind. Except for my death, of course. [...]

@jwz non-cyclists that are confused by activism think that activists are attracted to cycling, when the reality is that becoming a cyclist very quickly radicalizes one into becoming an activist. Nothing crystallizes strong opinions as being frequently threatened with death by at best indifferent and at worst aggressive and antagonistic people.

CityBeautiful recently released a great video about how to fix stroads.

It's accurate, and lines up exactly with the advocacy that my wife and I were doing 10 years ago, right down to using StreetMix to redesign streets.

It's also extremely depressing and makes me glad that I don't live in North America anymore.

@MrLee there's a book called The Sprawl Repair Manual that I always wanted to make a video about, but I couldn't get the copyrights to the images.

    https://sprawlrepair.com/home/

In part of it, the author talks about how to turn suburban malls into town centres, and then connect them together (and to downtown) by transit.

I think this is the best hope that suburbia has got.

Trying to urbanise the giant stroads of suburbia is basically a non-starter. There are so many other low-hanging fruits.

A 5 yr Belgian study showed the BIG impact of increasing vehicle weight on road deaths & injuries. When a person on a bike or walking is hit by a pick-up, the risk of serious injury increases by 90% compared to a car. The risk of death goes up by 200%.

It's annoying when people complain that my content is "too eurocentric". And after making my Shinjuku station video a lot of people are saying that "finally" there's some "non-eurocentric" content. 🙄

I make videos about MY experiences in cities. I don't summarize a bunch of facts you could easily find on Wikipedia, Twitter, or news articles, and then lazily recite it over stock footage.

I actually GO to places, experience them in person, and over 90% of my videos is footage I filmed myself.

@publixpace it's legitimately hilarious how I still get comments (and even emails!) from people who feel the need to "correct" me on my flags in my "winter cycling" video.

As if I wouldn't know the flags of Belgium and the Netherlands when I've lived in both countries.

Or how I could somehow use the wrong flag from Wikipedia when the country name is literally in the filename.

The best part is that they only ever notice one and don't realise that the other one is wrong, too. 🤣
