My latest video is now live on YouTube!

Nearly 3 million people pass through Shinjuku Station every day, which is an insane number. But despite the massive number of people transported, the area around Shinjuku supports some great urbanism, with vibrant street life and lots of independent shops

@notjustbikes i've watched a bunch of Life Where I'm From videos since you had him on The Urbanist Agenda so i was primed for Tokyo being big, and not really a city, but a conglomerate of cities, but 3 million people per day going thru one transit hub is mind blowing.

m2ts ,

@notjustbikes Just watched it. Those are insane numbers 🤯.

In Duitsland zijn het dan weer intrieste getallen: https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/kijk/2024/06/16/j13-trein-duitsland-mimir-d37d9628-df0c-48f9-94fd-155af0c311cc/

My world was shattered today.

There's this song, "Put Your Hands Up For Detroit." It was really big in 2006/2007.

I discovered today that it wasn't written by a Detroiter, or even an American. Fedde Le Grand is Dutch.

But what's worse? The lyric isn't "I Love This City," it's "Our Lovely City."

HOW?!

The sample was pulled from a 1999 song by Matthew Dear and Disco D entitled, "Hands Up For Detroit".

It's very clear in this version that the sample is "Our Lovely City."

My first video from my trip to Japan is now up on Patreon and Nebula.

I visited the world's busiest train station, Shinjuku station in Tokyo. This station transports 3 MILLION people every day!

Shinjuku station is really interesting because it isn’t just a ridiculously efficient transportation hub, it’s also an excellent example of how an effective train station can make the surrounding neighbourhood truly great.

These guys actually tracked down a copy of Archie (including the source code) and now have a public Archie server back online!

Archie was the Internet's first search engine (before the web existed). I remember using it in the early 90s.

It's pretty funny how usable 90s tech is: imagine, a search engine that just gives you direct links to file downloads without any other nonsense involved!

Beste {voornaam|Babboe eigenaar}

I see that Babboe applies the same attention to detail to their emails that they do when designing their cargo bikes. 😂

I also love how I put in the frame number of my bakfiets into their website and it says it's not a valid frame number. Cool. Cool.

I'm curious to see what they actually do about our bakfiets.

RalphStark ,
@RalphStark@todon.nl avatar

@notjustbikes
It worked, well the recognition of the frame number and the reply that the bike has to go back here in Germany. Not well, I had to give the frame number three times. First the reply was we only should let overlook the bike. Second they replied everything is fine, don't call us we will call you with information about the workshop till the end of may. Third time they answered the bike will go back, we will reply to you Very soon with our offer for the bike. Well that was 3 weeks ago.

They had the frame number in their database even before we contacted them, because we bought the bike directly from them. And not a any time they contacted us.

@notjustbikes China puts huge subsidies on anything they think will give them an strategic advantage, rare earths for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sb-GYt7HFI
I'm unsure why they would subsidize electric cars though, I think trains are the future.

It's fascinating how many times I've recieved almost this exact same comment

In order to write this, you need to fail at so many levels:

  1. not understand an obvious joke in a satirical video
  2. believe that I could miss "3.6L V6" literally WRITTEN ACROSS THE ENGINE in that scene
  3. believe that this is purposeful deception on my part
  4. not read the other hundred comments saying exactly the same thing

I guess some people's burning desire to "Well, ackshually" overrides all common sense. 🤦

@notjustbikes okay but if they are putting extra space in there for the engine it doesn't have, that means it's needlessly large and they could improve blindspots

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@krt3k yeah, I know they exist. I own lots of them! 😁

But the trickier part is re-negotiating USB-PD to the phone. This isn't rocket science, and just would require a microcontroller and another USB-PD chip, but the cost would add up for a low volume commercial product.

TIL that there's been a trend towards "4x4" in Drum'n'Bass music lately. Which, uh, kinda defeats the purpose of DnB?

I dunno about you, but this just sounds to me like Happy Hardcore with a softer kick.

I mean, I'm not complaining, artists can make whatever they want, but it's funny to me that this song is on the channel "UKF Drum & Bass".

I love that I can get a Shinkansen back to Tokyo at 10PM from a city with less than 100K population.

The drive would be 183 km and take 2h23m but this train will get me there in 1h10m.

It's included in my JR East train pass, too.

@notjustbikes I was on the new NS rail InterCity trains for the first time yesterday. I believe they were introduced last year and can go up to 200km/hr. I think they do run much faster between Breda and Rotterdam than the old ICD trains. The 2e class was even nicer than the much more expensive EuroStar trains.

@notjustbikes not that smart so tried to find something about why this isn't (as a long term resident of japan who has never lived in tokyo) always the best and here it is:
"Thus, only connections from a provincial city to the capital are fast, and the loss of province-to-province connectivity (more precisely the deemphasizing of such connections, since both Japan and France continued to build nationwide freeway networks) leads to a loss of independence in the provinces"
