I can't believe I'm in Japan when the Aurora Borealis is in the Netherlands.

Good thing I've already seen them before in Yellowknife.

I am on the weirdest train yet.

I booked the HIGH RAIL train, which is billed as a stargazing train.

I thought I was getting a train where you look at the stars from the train.

But no, it's a train where you go to the station near the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, get out for 40 minutes, and try to see stars from the parking lot.

Oh, and there's a detailed guided explanation in Japanese. And a small planetarium on board.

Weird.

At least they have good beer! 🍻

Tokyo has BBBase, a train designed for road cyclists to take their bikes out of the city for a ride.

It has big, comfortable seats and special racks for road bikes.

I am an old white guy with no bicycle. I'm sure everyone is wondering what the heck I'm doing on this train on an early Saturday morning. 😂

@notjustbikes @rmcauley On Apple TV it’s so much better to watch on Nebula. Not because Nebula is especially good, but because they’re not actively bad. They just have a video player.

It really is wild how far the US is behind the rest of the world when it comes to public transit.

Outside of NYC, Canadian cities have significantly more per-capita transit ridership than US cities ... and transit isn't even that great in Canada.

@notjustbikes MARTA in Atlanta is very good at getting to the places it goes but none of the surrounding counties will allow it to expand and it’s infuriating.

@notjustbikes I wonder if the US's reliance on cars is related to the country's negative view on taxation and social welfare.

When I discussed worrying trends in the EV market with another user on Mastodon, they (gender unknown) said public transport is funded by tax and maintaining it requires high tax and can increase the national debt. They argue that intercity railways and mass transit are partially responsible for Japan's national debt crisis since the government needs to inject money to keep them running well. Although railway companies like JR went private a long time ago, they still receive significant governmental subsidies. They also said the Netherlands has the same problem, which is why tax is high there.

I resisted my urge to argue with them because I had other things to do that day. But such views explain why some political views seem to have links to "carbrains". A favour towards less governmental regulation on the economy and less welfare for all is linked to car dependency.

I don't like that person's idea. You may feel a high "tax burden" is not favourable, but you can't always have a carefree life. If more welfare is needed to keep humans and everybody else sharing this planet healthy and happy, it is necessary.

My latest video about speed limits and Amsterdam's new 30 km/h streets is now available to Nebula and Patreon subscribers.

As usual, the YouTube release will be on Sunday.

The snark is turned up to 11 on this one, so I'm expecting a visit from the Tone Police in the comments. 😂

It's so damn frustrating that this can't just be universally implemented.. I hate walking near cars going 60 (because everyone drives 10 over) and not even talking about crossing the street.

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@MrLee @Aurimas @nerd4cities yes, exactly.

Advocacy is local, which is why I get so annoyed when people demand that I make "step by step videos" telling them how to fix their city (and get mad when I don't).

That's why I refer people to Strong Towns. They're a great first step to figure out what you need to do in your neighbourhood.

Otherwise, join your local safe streets or cycling advocacy group.

But either way, stop asking YouTubers and start talking to people locally.

Strong Towns has a new book coming out!

Chuck and Daniel Herriges' are about to release their book, "Escaping The Housing Trap". It's a great delve into the housing crisis in North America, and what's causing it, including the part that's almost never mentioned in the media: car dependency.

You can pre-order a copy now via the links on their website:

On thing Chuck, we can call him that right, mentioned in a recent clip of his, is that some forms of housing finance for rentals create price inflexibility.

Something about interest only loans as I recall. Lower rent devalues their property, putting landlords into financial stress.

I was cleaning out some old video files and I came across this gem from Associate Professor Brian Doucet at the UofW School of Planning (bmdoucet on the bad site).

This was taken in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada the city where I went to University.

It boggles my mind that Canadian traffic engineering can be so broken that something like this gets built.

How did nobody along the path to getting this created say, "why are we building it like this when you'd have to be fucking insane to cycle here?"

Painted bicycle lane between two traffic lanes and an entrance to a highway with large amounts of motor vehicle traffic.

I'm going to Japan soon, so I wanted to talk to one of the experts, Life Where I'm From, about what I should look for when I'm there, and we ended up having a great conversation about why Japan has stayed (relatively) affordable while other developed nations have not!

Hear our conversation in the latest episode of the Urbanist Agenda podcast (currently early-access for Nebula supporters, public release next week).

@notjustbikes for the 60cm to the road to build an house is not true anymore. Many still exists with 60cm to access to the road but it is illegal to rebuilt.
The nation wide law is 200cm.

The owner needs to buy part of the land of the next house or lose 50% of the value.

Damax ,

@notjustbikes Greg mentioned that new houses have double pane windows. It is true but the windows are not airtight most of the time. Most of the windows are on rail (imagine a barn door airtightness). I figure that out when I bought a brand new house that I had to buy new windows without rail for soundproofing.
At the end, my window (the physical hole) had 2 double pane windows.

I made the mistake of going on Twitter today to find a tweet. 😬

I'm glad Urbanist Twitter is not representative of actual urbanists, because it's basically just this. 😆

I will never understand the mentality of people who dislike a YouTuber and then rant about it for months on social media, instead of doing something sane like, say, watching something else, making the content they want to see, or maybe touching grass.

I genuinely think that too much social media rots people's brains.
