This is a nice touch on the Taipei Airport Metro. Wireless charging!

@notjustbikes
has charging points on its metro if you remember to bring a cable.

@notjustbikes in my experience these are extremely slow compared to USB-C PD…

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@mia well, yeah. Nothing is faster than USB-C PD, but I have never seen that on transit.

New transit vehicles are still being built with 5V USB-A sockets and that's even worse.

@notjustbikes I thought that was a baby change table at firest. Recharge your baby ⚡ 🍼 👶

@notjustbikes
...... I'm confused by where exactly you need to put your phone on these.

Unless they are the new qi wireless 2 standard which I highly doubt, there should be indications where the actual charging coils are

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@thibaultmol I believe that's what the "circle" of dots is around the words "Charging Area", because that's where it charged my phone.

@notjustbikes oh DERP. Scale of the picture wasn't clear to me so i didn't realize that it was the size of 1 phone. Got it

nice!

@notjustbikes that looks like a diaper changing station

cody ,

@notjustbikes I mean I guess it's better than having USB-A sockets like they do in Spain... Like no thank you, I'd rather not plug my phone into an insecure USB port...
I insist the better option is to just give you a 240V socket, but this is def better than USB

Unfortunately wireless charging is still terribly inefficient, and overheats like crazy. IMO it should probably only be used in an emergency.

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@czhang03 @cody yes, I know. And it's even worse if you leave the case on.

It will still charge faster than USB-A 5V @ 2A (or less!) that is typical on transit.

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@cody those USB-A sockets charge so slowly anyway. It's annoying that so many trains and buses are being built with these USB ports while the world is moving to USB-PD over USB-C.

As for security issues, that's why I used to travel with a charge-only cable (with no data lines at all). They also sell USB condoms, but I have no idea if that's technically possible with USB-PD.

implicitdeny ,
@implicitdeny@todon.nl avatar

@notjustbikes @cody probably not, as PD relies on establishing a negociation of max power rating supported by both end, so the data channel is mandatory. Preventing this negociation from happening will probably default to low power charging

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@implicitdeny That is what I suspect, too.

But you might be able to build some kind of USB-PD relay that would allow PD negotiations but no other data transfer, though I suspect it would be expensive.

krt3k ,

@notjustbikes @implicitdeny There are "USB-PD breakout boards" that allow you to just get a requested voltage and amperage out of a USB-PD power supply and those aren't too expensive iirc, so combining that with another negotiator shouldn't be too expensive

notjustbikes OP ,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@krt3k yeah, I know they exist. I own lots of them! 😁

But the trickier part is re-negotiating USB-PD to the phone. This isn't rocket science, and just would require a microcontroller and another USB-PD chip, but the cost would add up for a low volume commercial product.
