There’s some nutjob around Lake Tahoe putting up flyers telling people to feed bears

@SwiftOnSecurity

It’s the year 2032. Last night you’ve had to reset your AI girlfriend to factory for the 4th time after it became increasingly distant and distrusting. You are convinced it is a bug and continue to harass the developers about it. This doesn’t happen to any of your friends.

homelessjun ,

@SwiftOnSecurity

that he has no real girlfriend is definitely a key clue to the problem here.

Silly question:
You know how there are HDMI splitters/adapters that strip DRM?

Are there any that do the opposite? Add DRM?

Like, if I want my computer to think my VCR's HDMI signal is Highly Copyrighted Stuff, can I do that?

homelessjun ,

@foone drm specifically? or hdcp, the copy protection/encryption method used with hdmi?

if the latter, there are hdcp transmitters. there are several models listed on kramerav[dot]com that have hdmi in and twister pair, such as "HDBaseT" out. these pair with a receiver to convert the twisted pair signal to hdmi.

there reasonably be inline hdcp injector/convertors for hdmi but have not found any so far.

watching the latest Deviant Ollam talk, they mentioned wondering if you can just trigger carbon monoxide sensors with some chemistry.

Turns out you can just buy tester canisters! They're just spray cans of Carbon Monoxide! That sounds... somewhat dangerous.

homelessjun ,

@foone have been subjected to this "non-invasive" co detector testing. that stuff stinks. very low odor threshold.

Coworker takes all your written text and video calls and turns you into their AI partner. One day they accidentally message the wrong version.

homelessjun ,

@SwiftOnSecurity btdt. except it was not "ai".

I saw this voltmeter at the electronics flea market. Look at that massive probe! It looks like you need to check your back blast before using it.
Apparently it's for REALLY high voltages? Like, 3kV?

homelessjun ,

@foone looks like it is for more than 3KV. i've seen similar probes used on particle accelerators in the 0.5MeV range. (you're not supposed to be holding them during use.)

Here's something cool I never realized existed:

PCBs distributed through magazines!

From Radio Electronics (June 1987):

https://archive.org/details/radio_electronics_1987-06/page/n68/

homelessjun ,

@foone pcb images printed in magazines often were printed in reverse so that they could be xerox-copied on to polyester film, which it barely stuck to, then the print flipped onto the copper board and toner transferred using a hot iron. then tape was used to mask spots the toner did not stick to. toner resists ferric chloride fairly well.

homelessjun ,

@foone photolamps were cheaper and often faster.
