I saw this voltmeter at the electronics flea market. Look at that massive probe! It looks like you need to check your back blast before using it.
Apparently it's for REALLY high voltages? Like, 3kV?

@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone I'd go up an order of magnitude at least, you wouldn't need it that big for 3k. The little TV repair sized hv probes you probably saw around in various places are made for like 30

@foone I love that it has a pressure gauge! I wonder if it also came with a can of Freon to top it up like the old Tektronix HV probes?

@foone the Arc distance in air for 3 kV is less than a quarter of an inch.
MV maybe? Those Tesla coils won't build themselves after all!

@foone there's a real Ghost Busters vibe coming from this thing

@foone Probably much more, I have one that is for the lower two digit KV range and it is much shorter.

Keab42 ,
@Keab42@kind.social avatar

@foone did you buy it?

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@Keab42 nope! It's huge and I have no need for it.

Taffer ,
@Taffer@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@foone that totally looks like something out of Fallout 👍

gsuberland ,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@foone you're probably an order of magnitude low on that number

@ieure@retro.social avatar

@foone Has to be way more than that, I have a Fluke HV probe good to 50kV and it's about a quarter the size.

mathew_m ,
@mathew_m@hachyderm.io avatar

@foone Looks like a regular Fluke 187 multimeter, which can handle 1000V at the terminals. That white line below the rotary switch isn’t standard though.

My guess is that the high voltage probes have a voltage divider built in.

Jencen ,
@Jencen@furry.engineer avatar

@foone Looks like it's for dead checking in substations.

I have a need... just not for the intended purposes o.o

@foone

What's the dial on the probe?

homelessjun ,

@foone looks like it is for more than 3KV. i've seen similar probes used on particle accelerators in the 0.5MeV range. (you're not supposed to be holding them during use.)

Nine ,
@Nine@chitter.xyz avatar

@foone ...i feel like the voltmeter should be much, much larger if it's gonna be for that many volts

Lttngblt ,
@Lttngblt@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I looked at this while watching Jenny Nicholson's Star Wars Hotel video and thought that was a prop lightsaber for a split second

hanshuebner ,
@hanshuebner@mastodon.social avatar

@foone More like 30kV, I'd say.
