See, I agree with everything here, but I also exist in capitalism, and X is a vital conduit to people in the games industry, without which we’d have a very hard time making money. I hate it.

@parisba yeah. I was working on a game when Elon bought Twitter, and I had to leave.
Guess what happened to the game? It's canceled now, because part of what made it a viable idea was the Twitter audience who would buy it!

I think a lot of time when the Torment Nexus thing is brought up, people are getting the arrow of causality the wrong way around. It's not that necessarily that Bobby Techbro read "Don't Create the Torment Nexus" and was inspired to make one, even if that's what the marketing tries to sell it as.

No I think that's not giving scifi authors the proper respect as futurists. They looked at how things were going and thought "man, this might lead to a Torment Nexus" and then wrote a story about that.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@JonnyT @blogdiva exactly. They're going "someday someone might make a Torment Nexus. Here's my ideas about what terrible shit would happen if someone made it".

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

And they were right. A Torment Nexus did get built, it just got named after the one in their book because of the obvious precedent.

Had they not written the book, the Torment Nexus would still exist, it just would have been called the TechCo.io TortureHub instead.

Novel compression method: we take all the textures in the game and describe them as AI image generation prompts.
Then, at load time, we run the generative image AI on the user's computer and thus generate them fresh.

The text descriptions are tiny compared to the images, so we get amazing gains in file size!

BRB training an image generation model on all the Doom textures

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Realistically I should be training it on, like, all 90s FPSes, as otherwise the generators model is going to be WAY bigger than the textures themselves would be.

Plus it'd be funny to see Half Life texture influences showing up in Wolf3D

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@wbftw not really.

foone OP ,

For the next big Twitter-killer social media network, our trademark bad idea is that we're not gonna let users enter alt-text:
Instead we're just using an LLM to identify what's in the photo.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

That's just phase one.
Phase two we protect your identity by taking those descriptions and feeding them into an image-generation AI. So you can't be identified from your selfies with your cat, as you're not technically in them

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@cJ oh they are absolutely doing that and have been for years. It's free training data

Anyone into nuclear safety should listen to the last segment of Well There's Your Problem: a listener wrote in with a story of a minor safety incident at a nuclear plant, which resulted in a about 50 angry naked men trapped in a lunchroom, while a secretary makes an emergency trip to the Walmart to buy "all the underpants they have". 10 out of 10, no notes.

I wonder what the most computing power anyone has put into a keyboard is?

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Like, slab computers like the c64 don't count. I'm defining "keyboards" something like "devices intended as input devices for other bigger computers, which have over 26 buttons"

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

It's probably one of these modern mechanical ones which are using arm cortex m0 chips instead of the usual atmels.

foone OP ,

Anyway I was wondering because I was thinking about putting a whole raspi (not a pico) into a keyboard

foone OP ,

A pi zero might work well. Plenty of pins, and it has usb gadget mode

foone OP ,

@Matt I mean, that's probably not THAT uncommon these days. So many keyboards were designed around Teensy 2.0++ or Teensy LC boards, and now that you can't get them, Teensy 4.x is the closest replacemetn

I don't think that anyone should seek office who has a reasonable belief they would not end up fully experiencing the consequences of their actions in that office.

For instance, if someone's planning to move out of a city in a couple years, I don't think that they ought to run for mayor of that city.

This principle can be extended.
