The Roman empire fell because their Roman numerals weren't a form of positional notation, so they couldn't figure out binary. Their computers were terrible.

@ariadne @jwz I'll see if I can trigger it in a VM so it can be properly screenshotted

A fun side effect of being anosmic is that sometimes I think I smell something, but it's just the nasal equivalent of phantom limb.
The best part about this is that because the smells I'm supposedly smelling aren't real, my brain doesn't seem to think they should be limited to things that would make sense to smell; you know, physical objects with distinct odors.

I just smelled slackware.

when I finally build my Workbench Keyboard, one of the weirder options I'm going to add is a way to paste pre-loaded text files from the onboard storage.

like you could have texts\serials\windows\win10.txt and you navigate to the that file and hit paste and it just types out the FCKGW- nonsense for you

the real reason we moved away from them is that IBM never managed to invent an RW variant of the punchcard. They were only Punchcard-Rs

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

this is a shitpost of course but it's actually pretty accurate in how punchcards and CD-Rs worked.

They both are sold with them being all 1s/all 0s, and then you can selectively change some of the bits to encode something into them

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

but you can only go in one direction, 1->0 or 0->1 depending, and you can't go back.

foone OP ,

Fun fact about microfiche:
One of the first uses of it was due to pigeons.

During the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, Paris was under siege and they got dispaches out by using microphotography to make them small enough that they could be attached to pigeons and flown out of the city.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I've used a lot of weird media formats over the years but "we have to make the mail small enough that pigeons can carry it" is a unique reason for being invented

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Bad idea: an external floppy drive that can appear as a mass storage device of arbitrary size. The way it works is it has a little screen, and you use that to configure how big you want it to be, then it formats the proper number of 3.5" floppy disks.
Then when the PC tries to read a sector that's not on the current disk, the display will just prompt you to insert disk or whatever.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@Elbrar yeah something like that

I like how the ASRock site tells me to update my system by downloading a zip file, extracting it, and putting it on a USB drive or floppy disk

it's 16mb, dude. Which floppy do you want me to put it on? a zip drive? DOES YOUR BIOS SUPPORT ZIP DRIVES?

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

obviously I'd try it but this is my roommate's machine and she wants it back and working, not broken because I tried to update the BIOS off a zip drive

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I updated the bios and now it can't boot

it can see the HD, the one I just installed windows onto, and it can start installing, but it gets like a minute into booting and then says it can't access the boot device.

I'm sure this is fine
