I brought my KDE idle RAM usage down to 500MB just by using the GUI options that come with it. That's about the same amount a default Xfce or LXQt needs.
I disabled all animations, the baloo file indexing and all services that start automatically at login.
I also installed not the full KDE Suite but just Plasma Desktop and then uninstalled all parts I don't need.
So technically, I'm not running KDE but Plasma. From the KDE application Suite I use Dolphin, Konsole, the archiver, the image viewer, the PDF viewer and the system settings tool.
I wouldn't be surprised if 15% of the population had ADHS. I'm also convinced it's not really a disorder, but a different writing in the brain that is (or was, in prehistoric times) beneficial in a lot of ways.
People with ADHS can achieve an impressive level of focus, determination and endurance if an activity interests them, can find creative solutions to problems because they think differently, and function better under a certain type of stress.
IMO they'd make great stone age hunters.
The problem is, our modern society doesn't fit their mindset at all, so they suffer in it and need medication and therapy to function in today's world.
I tried it recently, but eventually gave up. It had so many little and not-so-little issues on my laptop, which I solved one by one over 2 weeks, reading and learning a lot. Even recompiled the kernel with a custom patch to get energy management to work.
Then I did a speed test on Wi-Fi, and it capped out at 6MBit (I have a Gigabit connection). The solution apparently is to install a Wi-Fi network adapter inside a Linux VM and connect to that on boot.
That's when I went back to Debian where everything just works out of the box on my PC.
It scans for viruses inside the archive, which takes longer than the 5 minutes interval before it spawns a new maintenance task, which scans inside the archive while the previous task is still scanning...
I don't want my OS to stand out. I want it to be out of my way.
Like an antisocial dude in the basement who quietly handles my I/O processes for me without giving me his opinions or "helping" me manage my media and contacts.
To install the current version of Windows on my PC, I need to enter command prompt from within the installer and type 2 commands to disable ethernet and the online install requirement.
Otherwise it won't let me install it without a Microsoft account.
Almost all major desktop Linux distros let you install them with "Click Next until Done" now.
When my mom needed a new PC, she asked me, the family's computer guy. I asked her what she does on her PC, bought one, installed Debian with Cinnamon, activated automatic security updates without notifications, set up her printer and an ssh/vnc server for remote assistance. I haven't heard of any issues in 2 years.
Also being heavily pushed towards apps for websites like YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, Facebook… Lemmy, Mastodon… They are all “best experienced” in apps, and most of them will probably try to push you ads or make you pay.
That has nothing to do with the operating system. Just use Firefox, set it to show you the desktop version of the websites, and you'll have the same experience as on a desktop PC.
Except with a smaller screen size.
