Allero ,

What's the difference? You mean a DE is available but not the base software?

Allero ,

Cool, though mileage will vary considering guix is linux-libre

Allero ,

I can and do, of course!

The point was only about guix

Or do you mean I can change kernel to non-libre?

Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box ( lemmy.world ) Englisch

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

Allero ,

Love the explainer to the meme.

Keep up the good work!

Allero ,

Probably the only reason I did not get into Terraria as an experienced Minecraft player is that my brain really hates 2D worlds.

I realize I miss out on many wonderful games, but how the hell do you feel comfortable restricted to one plane? This constantly makes me as a character feel I'm out in the open from two sides, and God knows what's there.

Maybe it's some weird quirk, but my brain is strictly 3-dimensional.

Allero ,

Yes, but my brain subconsciously interprets 2D worlds as ones in which there are front and back (away from screen and in front of it), and I just can't look there and see what: s there.

Like if you'd build a house with floor, two walls on the opposite sides, and the ceiling, and would decide to completely ignore that your house is actually a tube and two sides are wide open to the outside world.

Allero ,

Yeah, kinda captures the idea.

Allero ,

Top down is better, but I'd still rather have even pseudo-3D (like in many strategy games for example, especially older ones).

But yeah, I often challenge my mind thinking that "down" is very arbitrary and is just normally takes along the weight force vector :D

Allero ,

I never challenged that notion - it's just that for me personally 2D is a nightmare and 3D is not.

Allero ,

Which is yet another confusing thing for me :D

But I learned to play some third-person games, while others still hurt. For example, generally slower pace and auto-aim World of Wacraft is alright, but action-packed Warframe that also offers me to shoot in third person (why on goddamn Earth?) is killing me.

As per Valheim, I tried, but it felt odd to me. But thanks a lot for the recommendation!

Allero ,

For building vast structures, to me it's mostly Space Engineers, but that's another concept too, not exactly "build a gigafactory" type game. Still, building something big and cool it does.

I'm also sad MMOs are rarely first-person. Like, there was Tera, but it died immediately as I first heard of it, which is super unfortunate because it certainly seemed to tick my boxes.

I didn't play The Talos Principle, but heard about the game. Spent quite a while in both Portal games though - good times.

Allero ,

Fair enough!

Debian used to be so good. What happened!? ( lemmy.world )

Firefox on Debian stable is so old that websites yell at you to upgrade to a newer browser. And last time I tried installing Debian testing (or was it debian unstable?), the installer shat itself trying to make the bootloader. After I got it to boot, apt refused to work because of a missing symlink to busybox. Why on earth do...

Allero ,

Yeah I also didn't understand the take about Minecraft.
It's literally installed the same way as in Windows. Being a Java game, it doesn't care at all, you can run it on whatever. And Java itself is installed just the same.

Allero ,

Gonna say I hated my experience with some of the LibreOffice apps, especially Impress. PowerPoint (and for that matter, Onlyoffice) is far superior.

Allero ,

Second approach is better as it teaches you to fix and understand the system you're working with

Of course, this is a more complicated and energy - demanding approach, though. But if you wanna stay on Linux, you better figure such stuff out, this will be invaluable in the long run.

I should also mention that Debian, despite the Bookworm introducing more user-friendly options, is not a newbie-centered distribution and fixing things in there tend to be more tedious for an inexperienced user.

The upside, however, is that once you've set it up, everything will just work. But first you might face some pain.

Allero ,

Immediately get to work with Manjaro✅

Allero ,

-native Arch, probably

Allero ,

1.It doesn't die

2.The issue is blown super out of proportion

3.Arch is more than AUR. It's a bleeding edge, very lightweight distro. And both characteristics go into Manjaro - granted, there's a two week review period and some stuff installed on top. At the end, you get a super snappy, super nice system with a lot of value added on top of it.

Allero ,

USB devices just not fitting the damn slot is an all too common issue, and it normally takes me 2-3 rotations to finally insert it if I'm not actively looking.

Allero ,

Wow! Can't believe it actually exists lol

Allero ,

Never, because apparently someone craves thinner smartphones and tablets, and a barrel USB is a bad fit for that.

Allero ,

What's concerning is that someone literally searched for this to make the meme :D

...AND SOMEBODY DELIVERED

Allero ,

Asking for a friend?

Allero ,

Ew

Keep your filthy perversions to yourself, young man

Allero ,

I did bork Windows 10 after a big fall update

Also, sometimes Windows can stuck in an endless loop while updating, forcing user to force restart. Consequences may vary...

Allero ,

As people said above, depends on the purpose that drove person to Linux, really.

If it's about getting a user-friendly everyday system that just isn't powered by corporations, certainly terrible pick.

If motivation is to learn more about computers, the way they work, to tinker a lot, then why not.

But by default we should assume the former indeed.

Allero ,

Standard non-customized KDE is so good I personally don't know why would anyone want it to mimic anything else.

It's what Windows wished it could look like.

Allero ,

It kinda doesn't IMO. It's a very different style from modern standards, and it uses very bulky interface solutions that were suited for a much weaker computer era.

Like, it's nostalgic and nice, but it's by no means keeping up.

Allero ,

KDE is no less casual, so it's a matter of your personal preference :)

And it's just a habit - some people grew with docks, some with start menus.

Allero ,

For real though, if you break ANYTHING in Linux, it can probably be repaired through live image on your flash drive.

Allero ,

Long-term Manjaro user, no issues.

Just don't mess with AUR unless you have to; it's a good practice to make snapshots as well.

Endeavor is no more stable, it's very much unfiltered Arch with all its issues of "oh, you didn't read an update note? Your bad". Arch had literally broken GRUB on updates in the past.

Allero ,

Interesting. Never experienced any of that personally. Might depend on hardware?

Allero ,

All jokes aside, using Linux really does bring some peace of mind when it comes to malware.

While Linux malware certainly exists, it's nowhere near as prevalent as Windows one, so that's one less headache to give serious consideration to.

Allero ,

Probably still not as bad as Windows due to open source nature

After all, there's plenty of Linux servers around, hacking them can be a huge market, so there already is an incentive to hack into Linux.

Also, it's a bold assumption that Linux will overtake the desktop market the way it did with servers in any reasonable timeframe.
