Oh my god.

All my life I‘ve been paranoid about accidentally putting the wrong fuel in my cars and it turns out THAT’S NOT EVEN POSSIBLE ANYMORE because they made the diesel nozzles bigger, so they won’t fit

Why do anxieties inherited from my dad not update themselves 🙃🙃🙃

thejpster ,
@thejpster@hachyderm.io avatar

@fasterthanlime you can still put a petrol nozzle in a diesel, if that helps :)

I wonder what the most computing power anyone has put into a keyboard is?

thejpster ,

@foone does the Raspberry Pi 400 count?

Edit: no, it does not. Unless you can get a USB Device port out of it somehow.

Fun fact: Box::<[i32; 6]> is half the size of Box::<[i32]>

It seems that when a Box contains an unsized type like a slice, the Box value includes both the pointer and the size.

I know references did this (&[i32; 6] vs &[i32]) and I guess it makes sense that Box does it to, but I never really thought about it before.

Okay well JPEG-XL might not be supported in browsers but nobody said I can't use it as an "original" format in my blog's content/ directory, right?

(Note: I'm still serving AVIF to browsers)

Showing total file sizes: 1.1GiB for PNG, 16MB for JPEG-XL. I explain I used lossy compression with quality 30, which is still visually undistinguishable

thejpster ,
@thejpster@hachyderm.io avatar

@fasterthanlime does using JXL cause … a little less conversation?

Todays excitement:
There’s a rocket launch scheduled from Vandenberg Space Force Base tonight, and I’m “only” ~3hrs drive away.

Let’s hope the bastard doesn’t scrub!

@mattgrayyes Mulder and Scully were always in Motels. So it’s also Ok if you’re investigating Federal Crimes, or using them as a loose excuse to do something you really want to do but do it on expenses.

One thing that is cool about LLM‘s right now is how there’s actual competition, the likes of which I haven’t seen in other fields lately.

I’ve been enjoying GPT-4o, now Claude Sonnet 3.5 is out and I can just switch to it with one line of config. Until next time.

thejpster ,

@fasterthanlime now I can see how a smart autocomplete is useful in this scenario - and for all kinds of cases where a human needs some help producing new words. As long as the human knows enough to know what is right and what is wrong.

But I am tired of people telling me it’s going to revolutionise their business, I’m tired of companies using LLMs instead of paying humans, and I’m tired of companies stealing work to build the models they intend to make massive profits with.

Did -Wunused-crate-dependencies disappear from rustc? I get a warning about an unknown lint on a very recent nightly

One day I’ll get my shit together.

thejpster ,

@fasterthanlime yeah - for me, it’s looking at my phone on the bus that’s the real killer. Every time I think “maybe it’s ok now?” It’s never ok now.

like, was this the most optimal or elegant way to code this?

no, but it was the most fun to write.

thejpster ,
@thejpster@hachyderm.io avatar

@foone @QuietMisdreavus I mean, there was literally no reason to write a four channel MOD player in Rust for my homebrew computer. I did it anyway. Most of my open source is “I wanted this to exist”, and for no other reason.
