@TechConnectify I tried this with the only regular powder we could find, this one, and can vouch for all of this advice. Everything perfectly clean.

@TechConnectify Possibly a dumb question but is the powdered dish detergent something we can safely stock up on? Buy a couple years supply of it while its available?

jontringham ,
@jontringham@mas.to avatar

@TechConnectify I never clean my dishwasher filter manually, I just empty it out in the trash then put it on a shelf in the dishwasher when I do a cleaning cycle so there are no dirty dishes with food remains that need filtering.

@TechConnectify Do you have the optional prewash system? It is excellent removing syrups, sauses, and gravies. And meaty bits that jam the drain flow meter.

This one is a former racing named ”Rocky”. Unfortunately, maintenance is somewhat expensive.

@TechConnectify Your videos are always fun, even if they’re about topics you already covered. I just watched both new dishwasher videos and found out you’re also on Mastodon. It’s great to find you here on a free and federated network!

@TechConnectify Thoughts on the new dishwasher trays with the prongs that are impossibly close together for thicker dishes and bowls?

@TechConnectify Someone shared it on lemmy (https://lemmy.nowsci.com/post/8091511), in case you're into monitoring discussions there

@TechConnectify Does your neck of the woods have any Zero Waste/Zero Packaging type stores? There are a few near me with bulk powdered dishwasher detergent where you bring your own container to refill. Something to look out for as boxes of powder become harder to find!

@TechConnectify I love this series of videos so much (and have sent them to so many people) that I was very excited to see a new video pop up in my recommendations. I was telling a friend all about the series when I suddenly felt sad realizing it wasn't new and was just a rehash video. :(
But I'm glad you made it so I can send it to even more people.

@TechConnectify I can't believe how I must have watched the original video and forgot about 1/2 of the tips. So today I watched this whole 27 minute video and was very impressed. It was not said in this new video but recently it was in the news that pods are contributing to microplastic particles in the water supply. So for ecological and environmental reasons I will be switching to the powder once again. Highly recommend US folks who use dishwashers take a look at this.

Caillte ,
@Caillte@mastodon.world avatar

@TechConnectify as a Midwesterner (Michigan!) who enjoyed your original videos, the only thing I subbed out was going for the powder detergent over liquids because I try not to buy plastic bottles and I try to avoid paying for shipped water (an issue I’ve found in a lot of gel and liquid cleaners)
That said, Meijer is the go to for me getting a store brand powder detergent.

@TechConnectify My dishwasher works for me but I kinda wish it wouldn't so I can buy some powder.

@TechConnectify I went to check how long it takes my kitchen sink to get hot, it was 30 seconds.

Time to start cranking the sink up before starting the dishwasher! Thank you!

@TechConnectify hot damn! YouTube is….I like it less and less as time goes by. I have no real interest in dishwashers (but have watched the original videos) and now it’s try to get me to watch more stuff about dishwashers because this new one is out.

InsertUser ,

@TechConnectify my local supermarket doesn't even sell powder or gel dishwasher detergent anymore :-(

trantion ,

@TechConnectify Another dishwasher video from you reminds me how stunned I was recently to see someone basically hand-washing their plates before putting them in the dishwasher

skaverat ,
@skaverat@skaverat.net avatar

@TechConnectify I don't think I've ever given you feedback on the original dishwasher video.

I basically switched away from tabs/pods and moved to powder.

I never had issues with cleanlyness, but using powder is just insanely cheaper and easier to handle

TechConnectify OP ,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

@skaverat This is one of the things that's personally quite baffling to me!

Outside of folks with disabilities, I cannot understand what convenience the pods are actually giving people. The box of powder is trivial to use - just grab it and pour.

I know brains are different and some people will fixate (and stress) over how much to use, but I feel like it can't be such a large percentage of the population as to have effectively nuked the powder market.

TechConnectify OP ,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

@skaverat It just smells way too much like the detergent manufacturers discovering a way to make more money by A) preventing people from stretching their detergent and B) inventing marketing gimmicks which make people believe their products are magic.

skaverat ,
@skaverat@skaverat.net avatar

@TechConnectify it's definitely a way to sell more expensive stuff that is also used up faster.
The marketing definitely helped. "Powder is for old people, pods are new and trendy" is basically the vibes I get ever since I remember seeing them

skaverat ,
@skaverat@skaverat.net avatar

@TechConnectify for me it was just that I bought random dishwasher tabs when I got my own dish washer, and never had any real problem with them. So didn't really have any real reason to try out powder.

Plus, childhood memories of washingmachines powder randomly leaving clumps of powder in your clothes from time to time also probably kept me away from it, I think

TechConnectify OP ,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

@skaverat Hmm, that's an interesting angle. I also have had that problem with powder laundry detergent when using an old-fashioned top loader. I did eventually realize it was best to start it filling before loading clothes, but some modern machines don't let you do that anymore.

However, now I've got a front loader with a detergent tray and I've been using powder with zero issues at all. My only issue with powder is that the boxes are impossible to open without making a mess!

skaverat ,
@skaverat@skaverat.net avatar

@TechConnectify how is the washing machine pod detergent situation in the US? They tried to get that ball rolling a couple years ago in europe/germany, but I don't think it ever took any hold. it's mostly liquid detergent here

TechConnectify OP ,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

@skaverat Pods are popular but I'd say they only have about 50% penetration.

It's super easy to get pods, liquids, or powders in most stores.

@TechConnectify Just checked my dishwasher manual and indeed: it mentions I should add some detergent when using a prewash program.

Never knew, never done that, will try as soon as I get my hands on dishwasher powder. Thanks!

alkelu3 ,
@alkelu3@mstdn.social avatar

@TechConnectify The water softener mention reminded me I've already managed to convince someone to keep a 25+ year old dishwasher that they complained kept leaving a white plaque over everything so they were tossing it out for a modern one. A dozen or so cycles after I convinced them to start using the salt completely cleared that up so they kept it. So, with harder water. that part is apparently quite useful, indeed.
