It's a standard to display programs and let them interact with each other. The old way is X11 which is a big program handling all of that. With Wayland every desktop and window manager (like KDE, Gnome, i3wm, Sway, etc) take up the role of Xorg themselves, giving them better control.

Every program has to be changed to work with Wayland. Those that don't run through Xwayland, a program mimicking the old X11 standards on Wayland.

Remembering window placements should be possible on KDE with Kwin rules. Maybe your window manager has something similar.

Serious question: What makes Arch's package manager so "great"? I always just found it confusing to use. The flags don't make any sense to me. It feels like you have to add a varying number of s or y to get it to do what you want. I never found it to be any faster or slower than any of the others (apart from portage of course) out there. And apart from the flags it doesn't seem to give me any more or less trouble than the others.

This got me to convince my wife to switch to Linux again. She had the last Windows device in our household. She needed it for proprietary kitchen planners.

A kitchen planner is a program that lets you enter your room dimensions and then lets you fit kitchen cupboards, shelfs, cabinets and appliances in there. Ideally it comes with everything your supplier or contractor has on offer. Especially for colors and designs, but more importantly dimensions.

Luckily they are usually web based nowadays.

Don't know how to do it from Steam, but you can just launch their main game exes. On Linux you could add the exe to Steam or just use Wine or your Wine frontend of choice.

Bin bei einer privaten Fachhochschule als Programmierer angestellt. Abgesehen von dem relativ niedrigen Gehalt geht es mir da eigentlich ganz gut. Aber wir hatten auch einen tollen Chef der sich für unsere Abteilung eingesetzt hat.

Leider bin ich jetzt seit zwei Jahren dank Long COVID krankgeschrieben. Und inzwischen haben wir eine neue Chefin. Keine Ahnung wie die sich so macht, hatte sie nur kurz kennengelernt. Ich weiß nur, dass das Homeoffice aus der Corona-Zeit wieder eingestellt worden ist. Allerdings hatte unsere Abteilung diesbezüglich ohnehin eine Sonderstellung. Mal gucken wie die Lage ist, wenn ich wieder arbeiten kann.

Aber größtenteils ist mein Eindruck eher positiv.

Als wir uns vor unsere Ehe kostenlos von einem Anwalt für Eherecht, der mit Eheverträgen sein Geld verdient, haben beraten lassen hat der allgemein von Eheverträgen abgeraten, weil die gesetzlichen Vorgaben in den allermeisten Fällen ausreichend seien.

Wenn ich mich recht erinnere dann war das grob: Alles was vor der Ehe getrennt gekauft wurde gehört demjenigen der es gekauft hat, was vor der Ehe gemeinsam gekauft wurde gehört beiden und wird 50/50 geteilt. Während der Ehe geht man davon aus, dass alles zu 50/50 beiden gehört, außer wenn es eindeutig ist.

Unser Sohn braucht in seiner Klasse auch ein iPad. Auf die Frage, ob es denn unbedingt ein iPad sein müsste meinte der Lehrer, dass es grundsätzlich möglich sei, er aber einfach keine Ahnung hat und nicht bei anderen Geräten helfen könne.

I think the init system is the best part of systemd. It is sooo easy to use. You don't have to write the same complicated shell script for your software like everyone else. You just give systemd the path to your executable and that's basically it. It does the rest and you don't have to worry about PID files or forking the actual software. Systemd basically runs it like you did while developing it.

I think what people don't like are all the other parts of systemd that seem to be tightly coupled. I don't know if it is even possible to run just the systemd init without any other systemd package.

The last time I got angry at systemd was when resolvd did some DNS shit I did not approve of.

Hab mal bei einem Laden mit Webshop gearbeitet. Ziemlich chaotisch. E-Mail-Adressen kamen aus drei oder vier unterschiedlichen Quellen. Und selbst wir haben es geschafft allen Kundenwünschen direkt beim Versand von Newslettern zu entsprechen.

Und bei vielen großen technischen Unternehmen steht immer, dass es Wochen dauern kann bis eine Abmeldung bearbeitet ist. Flizpiepen.

I used to work at a company that used XSLT. They know that it's an obscure language that probably none of the potential candidates have ever worked with. But it's easy enough to learn the basics in an hour or two.

So the entry test was to strip some tags from an XML file. You had a day or two (maybe more) to do it. My solution wasn't ideal, I didn't use several of the shortcuts available in the language. But at least it did what it was supposed to.

A few weeks after I had started working there my boss came up to me, visibly frustrated and asked me whether the test was too hard. Thinking back on my problems I replied that maybe having the desired output ready so that you could test your own solution against it might be nice. But my boss's problem was that none of the last 5 candidates could even send in a solution that would run.

You had so much time, and running an XSLT script is really easy and takes no time at all. And for some inane reason these people couldn't even manage to test their code and still decided to send it in.

And I thought I was an idiot when I didn't know if it was spelled grey or gray in CSS during the in-person interview.
