I so hope the Tories loose so badly, that the Lib Dems become the largest opposition party. They at least are for rejoing the EU and would argue for it.

The answer would be high speed night trains. London - Rome takes a bit over 15h by train today. However that includes waiting for connections and a lot of stops on stations. So a direct train would be siginificantly faster probably more like 12-13h. That would mean you could go into a train station in London at 20:00 and end up in Rome at 8:00 for example.

Stockholm - Barcelona is a much longer journey. 2250km instead of 1400km for Rome - London. So a very long nigh train or a connection in Hamburg or Paris. with a night train going from there to Barcelona or Stockholm respectivly.

Most cars sold in the EU are still combustion engines. Replacing them with EVs would make enviromental sense and China giving state money to make EU EVs cheaper is not that bad a move.

Problem is obviously that the EUs automotive industry has to compete, but that can be done by matching subsidies as well.

MrMakabar ,
@MrMakabar@slrpnk.net avatar

And EVs are still better then combustion engines. Even better the EU is not going to be able to match Chinese subsidies. So the EU car industry is going to die and replaced by Chinese cars. However those will have a much harder time lobbying for car focused infrastructure. Just compare Germany and the Netherlands for example. One has a massive car industry and the other does not.

„Besteuert die Reichen“: Mehrheit der Deutschen für Vermögenssteuer ( www.fr.de )

Beim G20-Finanzminister-Treffen steht eine Sondersteuer für Superreiche erstmals auf der Agenda. Der Großteil der Menschen in den größten Volkswirtschaften der Welt befürwortet eine solche Steuer.

MrMakabar ,
@MrMakabar@slrpnk.net avatar

Das lässt sich lösen. Stiftungen müssen immer gemeinützig sein und Firmen dürfen keine Firmen besitzen.

MrMakabar ,
@MrMakabar@slrpnk.net avatar

This is using the German projection reports from the UBA, which is a ministry run by the Greens. Those tend to be overly negative. Last years report projected a rise of German emissions by a few percent, what happened was a drop of 10%. This year they again project rising emissions, but the Q1 data shows a 6.6% drop in emissions, with Q2 electricity data also looking rather decent. Even so the report finds most sectors will be within emission limits. The only ones with problems are buidling, which is mainly heating, and transport. The building sector is projected to be slighly over the emission targets, with some rather important laws having been passed last year, which according to the report close the gap to 96Mt to 32Mt until 2030. Transport is doing much worse however. The gap is massive at 180Mt until 2030 and most laws, which would have a large impact being blocked. To be fair the gap is smaller then the projection from last year at 210Mt.

Point is, that this is pessimistic. However climate change is a massive issue and obviously doing more to cut emissions is the right thing to do.

MrMakabar ,
@MrMakabar@slrpnk.net avatar

WTF are you talking about? This is about the Effort Sharing Regulation(ESR), which requires EU members to lower emissions compared to 2005 depending on how rich they are(richer countries need to do more). The UK is therefore not part of this at all, as it is no longer an EU member. Neither is Iceland btw.

MrMakabar ,
@MrMakabar@slrpnk.net avatar

Please read the article and not just the title. It is only about the EU and European is used like American is used for the US. Technically not true, but often used in more casual speech and by lower quality news sources.

MrMakabar ,
@MrMakabar@slrpnk.net avatar

Wissing to be honest. The transport sector is the only one to miss the target badly. Funnily enough 15billion€ is about as much as is currently missing to fix up the German railway network. As in fix it, not expand it.

MrMakabar ,

The EU past a lot of actually good policy in the last term. Namely ban of fossil fuel cars 2035, limiting certificates for the EUs carbon market, new carbon market for transport and housing and a bunch of other laws, which actually have some positive impact. For the most part the EU parliament was not only in favour, but activly pushing for it being one of the most pro enviromental policy parliaments in the world. That is probably going to stop and they likely try to kill some of the laws passed. So the key in the future will be defence for most enviromental groups. The laws which have been passed will lower emissions, but not fast enough.

As for nuclear the EU is so far this year at 73.2% clean electricity. The large countries with a lot of fossil fuels are Poland, Italy and Germany. Of those only Poland is activly pushing for nuclear. The EU parliament is not able to force the other two to do that.

The Brits are claiming that they had permission of the sultan, the governor and the city of Athens. However somehow no documents proving any of that are available in Turkey or Greece.

However Athens was part of the Ottoman Empire for 350 years and they had a lot more influence over it, then France had in Africa. It really is more like the Tsar giving permission to sell some mosaics from the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv.

Teslas are badly made, with good specs. The issue is that you can buy a well made EV with similar specs for less nowadays. Musk doing what he does, does not help. The smart move for businessmen is to stay out of politics as long as it does not effect them.

MrMakabar ,
@MrMakabar@slrpnk.net avatar

He got a point here and lets see what happens. German authorities have been way to hard on anything, which even smells a bit anti Israel. Especially Berlin is insane on this. When you start canceling jews for critzising what happens in Gaza right now, you really have a problem. Just to say it Yaroufakis is as far as I know not Jewish, but he also as far as I know ever called for the destruction of Israel as such, but the end of the illegal activities of Israel in Palestine.

I kind of get the feeling that somebody higher up is calling for a crack down on Chinese illegal practices in Germany right now. There is a lot in the past couple days, since Scholz has returned from Bejing and got nothing out of it.

MrMakabar ,
@MrMakabar@slrpnk.net avatar

He apparently tried to bring Bejing to be harder on Russia and was willing to use Germanys strength to persuade the EU to go easy on China. Kind of looks like it has failed and Germany is cracking down on China, but relativly silently.
