To be clear, since many folks seem to not understand it:
I am NOT saying Linux and FOSS software is perfect for all workflows. I am NOT saying you aren't "trying hard enough" if you can't switch or don't want to. I am NOT saying my way is better and your way is worse. I am NOT calling you lazy.
What I am saying, emphatically, is that telling people that #Linux and #FOSS are incapable of professional work is fundamentally incorrect.
Popular opinion seems to be that #GNOME and #KDE are "fighting/competing."
Sure we have our differences in philosophies and design, but it's way more akin to siblings having small spats. But in the end we are siblings in #FOSS family and I like GNOME folks a lot. And if anyone attacks my siblings, I'm there to defend them.
We can and we should work together as much as possible, not just GNOME or KDE but all other DE's too like #Budgie and #XFCE to be the best computing experience possible.
It's not perfect and it's never gonna be because perfection is unattainable, but perfect is also enemy of good.
It'd be nice if people were actually willing to listen to the reasons why decisions are made, rather than getting mad because they aren't decisions they like and refusing to listen to the people actually working on the software.
Particularly when it comes to #FOSS software, it'd be nice for people to appreciate the work that is done for free. Criticism is fine (and generally welcome), but being respectful towards the maintainers is important.
Theres always hidden 4th option where you just ignore the problem (and I don't think thats a bad thing necessarily, we all have limited amount of spoons). I rather have people ignore and walk by sometimes than just scream.
On 17 June 2024, you'll be able to apply for new financing from STF. We’re looking forward to proposals from critical and foundational open source technologies, whose work strengthens the #FOSS ecosystem. Thanks to all maintainers and contributors for your #opensource engagement! https://www.sovereigntechfund.de/programs#general-investments
“This project has been decomissioned. I, James Sumners, took it on when it was languishing without any maintenance as it filled a need in the ecosystem and I had built things at a prior organization that depended upon this project. I spent a lot of time triaging issues and reworking things toward a path that could be more easily maintained by a community of volunteers. But I have not had the time to dedicate to this project in quite a while. There are outstanding issues that would take me at least a week of dedicated development time to solve, and I cannot afford to take time off of work to do that. Particularly considering that the aforementioned organization was two jobs ago, and it is extremely unlikely that I will transition to a role again that will need this project.
So, why am I just now deciding to decomission this project? Because today, 2024-05-14, I received the following email:”
