Said by a man who ran a country that outlawed all but the party he was prime minister of. He was probably a little salty about criticism over the lack of democracy in his country.

That's not how it works. As long as FPTP exists, it will lock us into two parties. We have had multiple party systems that all demonstrated this principle. Some places are experimenting with alternatives on the state and local level, but it will take time.

Every single person on the planet is aware of climate change

I'm still trying to get my husband's uncle to get off his easy out of "well I guess it's happening, but humans didn't cause it." He, along with a lot of other people, are in an echo chamber. Obviously plopping pigment on monuments isn't going to do shit to convince them, but I don't know what will.

Then there are the rotting watermelons over in corner, expensive books that a professor in college required and then almost never used. And now they sit, unlovable because a new edition has come out with the problems at the back of the chapter rearranged.

I mean, I feel like I'm probably not going to be shot or macheted while in flight, so that's nice. But yeah, I know it's not great.

If you want to skip having a big ass bag full of liquids, many products are available in solid form. Toothpaste comes in tablets, shampoo comes in bars, and shave lotion also is available in bars. Then you can save your liquid quota for what really matters, like a wide assortment of personal lubricants.

Three bathrooms, three plungers. Never be caught without one.

We have a bidet on every toilet, but not a squatty potty. We tried one at our last place, but it quickly got really gross.

My university is still mostly on IPv4 for our infrastructure. We got in early on the IPv4 address gold rush, so we got a full /16 block. Not quite MIT's 18.0.0.0/8 block, but enough so there's little pressure to move. It can be a little embarrassing, feeling like an institution that should be breaking ground is instead trailing behind. At the same time, our IT department is chronically understaffed, so I can understand not doing the switch. It's not as simple as just flipping a switch, there are many ramifications of IPv6 that aren't immediately obvious.

At least where I'm from (Portland), it's really not hard to find good beers, ciders, and so on. There are food carts that have 20 beers on tap and an extra collection of bottled/canned options.

Oh yikes, zoonotic pathogens rejoice! We can barely deal with our own poop not making other humans sick.

Too often, the prevalence of right wing domestic terrorism in the US gets ignored. The Oklahoma City bombing, Dylann Roof, anti-abortion violence, and the Orlando nightclub shooting just to name a few. As far back as 1870, the KKK was formally considered to be a terrorist organization. Lynching is considered a terrorist act.

What exactly are these quotes supposed to prove? This was what, a few months or a few years after reunification? Any social change that large is going to cause some turbulence. And of course Parenti has an agenda, so he wouldn't include someone lauding their new experience.

Are you actually modding conversations you are directly involved in? When I have done modding, that would usually be discouraged as a conflict of interest.

But no, seriously, there's a big book of insults that actually fit Netanyahu. Genocidal maniac. Baby killer. Warmonger. Neocolonialist. The list goes on and on. Trying to fit the label "Nazi" on a Jew is a fool's errand.

I'm thinking the broomstick is going to be more trouble. That turns into toothpicks and ouchy ouchy.

We just had a downpour (COVID-19) and many of them were trying to blame it on umbrellas.

I must be really out of the loop. Where were people saying this?

Isn't every day except Christmas the right season for this meme, since those are the days this lazy bum doesn't work?

That's not how productivity works. It's basically looking at how much a person can produce with a given amount of labor.

Take that small scale subsistence farmer. Individually, they will live a precarious life. Their country will not have the surplus food needed for other pursuits like building cities, engaging in R&D, developing science, and so on. A smaller and smaller number of people need to be able to feed more and more using less land per person.

Manually copied manuscripts are another example. They were painstakingly copied over by hand in an incredibly low productivity manner. The introduction of the printing press essentially eliminated an art form, but gave rise to practical mass media.

In the present day, computers have been the main form of productivity booster. While arguably social media is a drag on productivity, overall computers open up a broad range of possibilities.

Like yo, cancer is incredibly productive.

Cancer is incredibly costly to society. Think about it, a single person getting cancer could mean many hours of them being in the hospital. Net zero on productivity

Demolishing subsistence farms and replacing them with cash crop slave plantations is mad profitable.

As I detailed above, transitioning from unproductive farms to highly productive farms is necessary. Don't believe me, ask Mao.

I could make thousands of dollars in a day if I just sold everything I own.

That would not be a productive activity since there would be no value added. Arguably there would be less value, since that stuff is likely worth more to you than it is to another person.
