The American road system baffles me for many reasons. The main one being:

🔴 Traffic light red:
You can turn right.
There will be no pedestrians crossing. You have right of way.

🟢 Traffic light green:
You can turn right.
There will be pedestrians crossing in front of you. You do not have right of way.

@mattgrayyes Next door in Nevada (and Utah, I think?), their custom is to attach a road name sign to a bridge or viaduct if it is flying overhead, even if there's no junction from one road to another. Also apparently applies for trail systems, which often cross underneath highways.

I enjoy navigating via landmarks and natural features -- aviation people call it pilotage? -- so identifying roads overhead when on foot is fun for me.

@notjustbikes For the non-metric folks, 317 km/h is equivalent to 0.96 American football fields per second.

Or 197 miles per hour.
Or 288 feet per second.
Or the speed to drive Interstate 10 in Texas entirely in 4 hours 27 minutes

Whichever system of units, it's a phenomenal land speed!

Tokyo has BBBase, a train designed for road cyclists to take their bikes out of the city for a ride.

It has big, comfortable seats and special racks for road bikes.

I am an old white guy with no bicycle. I'm sure everyone is wondering what the heck I'm doing on this train on an early Saturday morning. 😂
