@karlauerbach@sfba.social

I'm a techie & attorney.

Been on the net a long time.

I have a Norbert Wiener Award for Social and Professional Responsibility, and I've been a Fellow of Law and Technology at CalTech & Loyola/Marymount Law.

And yes, I am that person who was elected to the ICANN Board of Directors and who ended up suing them to see the financials (I won, hands down.)

Everything there is to know about me is on my personal and company websites:

@arstechnica Even if the actual copy that is used by the customer is transferred over the net, China customs still requires that software products sold into China be delivered on diskettes, CDs, or DVDs.

The 2025 Polestar 4: Great steering and a small carbon footprint stand out

The styling is sharp inside and out, but the infotainment needs some polishing.

@arstechnica We presently have a Tesla - one with a squeaking front suspension due to a badly designed ball joint on the front wheels (the joint corrodes due to water leakage into the joint - a problem solved for decades on other brands of automobiles.)

We realize that buying an EV is really buying into a charging network, and Tesla's is by far the best charge network.

However, that will change.

We like Polestar - we invested in the company. (The stock is not doing well, however.)

Yeah, infotainment is nice - but anyone who thinks that it can be even close to the experience of a good home system is ignoring the facts of highway noise and the need for a driver to be able to hear things like sirens and horns. (I largely drive a convertible with the top down, so I know road noise in an extreme way.)

Tesla investors sue Elon Musk for diverting carmaker’s resources to xAI

@arstechnica They have a valid civil case for unauthorized expropriation of corporate assets. I am not sure, however, whether a criminal case could be sustained. The SEC might also have some grounds for action.

@arstechnica If done without proper authorization from Tesla's board this could be characterized as criminal theft. I also get this tingling that says "check for SEC rule violations".

DNS glitch that threatened Internet stability fixed; cause remains unclear

For 4 days, the c-root server maintained by Cogent lost touch with its 12 peers.

@arstechnica The a-, b--, c-, etc root servers do not really talk to one another.

Rather they fetch their master zone file from Verisign who has a contract to maintain the root zone file.

The DNSSEC anchor file is obtained from IANA.

How a root server operator deploys these files through their anycast suite of actual physical servers is pretty up to the root server operator.

Updating California’s grid for EVs may cost up to $20 billion

Charging electric vehicles at home will exceed most power lines' capacity.

@arstechnica Home charging is already putting stress on in-home wiring. I know of too many houses with 100Amp or less feeds with wiring that is not up to the task.

We down-rated our home Tesla charger to 3.5kw to make sure we don't overload our in-house wiring.
