Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box ( lemmy.world ) Englisch

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

If that was made by redditors then where is the delusional far-right propaganda?

barsquid ,

I tried to install Win 10 in a VM recently and it spend hours updating after installing from the ISO. Also you have to turn off the internet to not create a Microsoft account? What a pain it is now.

barsquid ,

That is usury. That cannot be legal? Oh, no, I just checked, wow, usury laws are weak af.

barsquid ,

What is the advanced stuff you can do if you don't have garbage data?

Council of sheepdogs to decide if foxes are criminally liable for murder or if we should use pinky swears and the honor system.

They could sell Wyoming to Canada, that'd be alright with me.

barsquid ,

They think they can get away with it because they keep getting away with it.

barsquid ,

The real change that will take place is Project 2025. They are not the ones with their head in the sand.

barsquid ,

I think it would be hugely useful.

But obviously I don't want a malware company like Microsoft doing that "for me" (actually the purpose is hyperspecific ads if not long term planning to exfiltrate the data).

Not sure if I even trust myself with the security that data would require.

barsquid ,

Pretty much my same progression except I've come back to LibreWolf instead.

barsquid ,

That we all need something like tab muting really shows that the internet has gone to shit.

barsquid ,

Either I am too stupid for Traefik or it is needlessly complicated (or both). Their docs didn't help either, this image was relatable.

barsquid ,

I would love to learn Envoy but it looks like a truly steep curve.

barsquid ,

Anyone smart enough to run Arch is smart enough to recognize Elon is an imbecile.

barsquid ,

Debian does just work and is a good choice. I think people typically have good experiences on Mint also. Ubuntu is becoming like the Windows of Linux distros, I used to use it on everything but I won't be installing it on another machine because of Snaps.

If you plan on using Linux to do gaming you might want a more up-to-date distro tho.

barsquid ,

"Don't learn anything, just give up." Great, thanks, guys.

barsquid ,

This is pretty level-headed.

"Donald is a life-long con man and fraud, finally convicted of dozens of felonies in his later years. He is also a rapist."

barsquid ,

We are already (mostly all of us) stuck with one company's systemd. We're already on some portion of what you're describing. As long as we use FOSS I think somebody will be able to fork any software that starts turning to shit with ads, LLM everywhere, spying on your activity, etc.

barsquid ,

Maybe it was just easier to install those browser bars as admin.

barsquid ,

Is hibernate no longer a thing? I thought that needed swap.

barsquid ,

The rpm-ostree versions are exciting and powerful.

barsquid ,

You might be thinking of OpenOffice? OnlyOffice is at least open core under AGPL.

barsquid ,

They are. It is a huge problem that companies are allowed to do clickwrap bullshit with no human-comprehensible summary. But people are agreeing to this stuff.

barsquid ,

Even a single security fuckup on the scale of GitLab's mistake earlier this year means I will not consider using their codebase.

barsquid ,

Let's set up your subscription to your own hardware! Continue / remind me later?

barsquid ,

I bet people would be less enraged if the browser didn't randomly open so often.

barsquid ,

That's also my preferred way to remove Edge.

barsquid ,

Same, I used to always pick Ubuntu to spin up servers. Now I pick it never.

barsquid ,

I knew I'd find some receipts in here.

barsquid ,

And also warn newcomers not to invest time into those distros.

barsquid ,

I think it might be possible to get around all their menus with just tab and enter, but it's less of a pain with a mouse last I tried.

He's right, the installer should either make mice work or have a GUI that doesn't expect them.
