You're right (I didn't make the meme); mercury chloride was a historical multipurpose medicine.

Your comment is amazing, as an aside.

What do you mean it is fast?

Thanks; I'm just waking up so it didn't click

Another neat tidbit I learned while researching pumped hydro is that hydroelectric dams actually use the remaining inertia of the spinning generators to pump water back up the dams, which is much like the idea of regenerative braking in EVs

Some of them. Others, like the Kidston one use solar.

When I was first learning about this stuff, I (very incorrectly) thought that the purpose of the battery was to generate (rather than store) energy, so I had a hard time wrapping my head around how they could actually work. The idea, however, is that you have your main source of green energy, and when the grid can't take more energy, you use the excess to pump the water or lift the weight. Then, when the grid needs power you release your weight/water. In this regard, it builds capacity and stability of a green grid.

Yeah, we can use whatever as long as it holds the energy without loss. A suspended load has zero loss - so does a bunch of water behind a dam.

I don't see how thermal could do that though.

I don't follow

This is why pumped hydro is a lot better. 250 Mw from Kidston is nothing to sneeze at.
Gravity works in mining situations. The one I linked to stores enough to power 1000 homes for a year

Welcome.

I've been here a year and it's great. Prior to leaving Reddit, I was really disenfranchised with their community. Everyone on Reddit are insanely negative, pedantic fuck weasels. Subs were rife with bots that posted the same banal content, and turned into giant echo chambers. It was near impossible to have an opinion contrary to the popular one.

Lemmy is smaller, but our content is great and our communities are very friendly. You get to be you without much worry of some dickcheese jumping down your throat.

You're gonna like it here

This is the way

They are all talking about shooting people and marching armed on DC

Those sweet, sweet MAGA tears make such wonderful lube. My loins will never recover from this, and my nuts are going to look (more) like raisins

Means either the mgt is spineless and jumps to whatever the client needs without forethought, or they are completely disorganized

That's a great quote, but the only guy I can find with that name is a painter, with a small IG following

I would feel safer alone in a room with the bear than a politician. At least I know what the bear wants.

OP mentions that there isn't enough content.

I made the hard switch with a lot of other users on June 13, 2023. I haven't looked back. It was a bit weird to wrap my head around lemmy and federation at first. Lemmy also grew astronomically in those initial few months. More communities opened up, etc. A lot of those communities have died off, but the point I'm trying to make is that there is more than enough content here, if you look for it.

Another commentator points out ComMuNisT propaganda; I don't find it that bad. there's a couple communities that are tankies, or definitely hard left. There's also a lot of middle ground. I do find Lemmy more left leaning than Reddit, and much less likely to tolerate people with nationalistic views, but, as with all things internet, vote with your feet. Don't like it, then leave.

Overall, Lemmy is a lot more chill and I encounter a lot less persnickety users on here.
