I'll throw my opinions in here.

If you're publishing a standard or a reference application, a permissive license makes sense. What better way to guarantee compatibility than being able to use the reference code in your product. This is what happened with the TCP/IP stack, and it was used in its original form in Windows for years.

If you're making something that you want to build a community around, something more akin to the GPL may be more aligned with your goals. The nice part is, you can include MIT licensed projects as part of your GPL project. This means there is nothing stopping you from building your standard with a MIT license while building your community-driven application using GPL, maximizing the reach of your standard while reducing the risk to your community.

Note that either option opens you to EEE (Embrace, Extend, Extinguish), the GPL option just takes an extra step (clean room implementation of a published standard).

It really depends. If the contract gives ownership of the work created to the purchaser, he has no rights to it whatsoever. Moreover, trying to do a clean room implementation of your own code is almost impossible without help. A permissive license would give the purchaser unlimited use of the product, including resale while still allowing the producer unlimited use, as well. If the contract is written correctly, the producer might even retain ownership, with the right to use different licenses, while the purchaser would have few or no restrictions.

GreyEyedGhost ,

There is nothing stopping a GPL project using MIT-licensed code except for lack of desire to do the work. They are one-way compatible.

GreyEyedGhost ,

You can even do those things without raising the spectre of communism.

"Fires two random arrows, both to the linguist's heart. Imagine if he tried!"

GreyEyedGhost ,

Well, good thing this is memes and not science. Not saying I find it interesting or amusing, either, but its relevance doesn't have a bearing on its value.

GreyEyedGhost ,

I generally agree with you, but honestly, pro-China and pro-Soviet users talking about American deaths is whataboutism itself. I'm not saying they shouldn't, but it's rather glaring how much they avoid their own missteps.

GreyEyedGhost ,

You're right, this post is about America, and I don't want to diminish what they've done. But if one wants to criticise, one opens thselves up to criticism. Glass houses and all that. In that vein, the OP seems to have a very limited set of topics, and if you remove criticisms of capitalism and America, he doesn't seem to have much to say at all. It makes you wonder if they have an agenda, or if they're even an actual person at all.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Certainly, at least as silly as having political views that only focus outward and not inward.

Some of those pills make you more you.

Imagine waking up every day knowing how hard just everything is going to be, how it's going to take every ounce of effort you have to be and act the way you want to, like carrying 100 pounds on your shoulders from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep.

Now imagine taking a pill and that burden is just...gone. You get up in the morning, and things are fine. Something happens on the way to work, or at work, or your kids just do some dumb kid shit when you get home from work and, rather than having to have one more thing on that giant burden you've gotten used to carrying around that puts you over the edge, it's just one thing. You deal with it and move on.

That's what being on antidepressants was like for me. I'd wake up and be in a good mood for no damned reason. Bad stuff would happen and I wouldn't be upset for the day, or the week. I loved being on antidepressants. And when it got to the point where nothing was bothering me nearly as much as it should have, I talked to my doctor and got my dosage reduced, then eventually stopped my prescription altogether. Taking that medication for 5 years was the best thing I could have done, and I wish I'd done it at least a decade sooner.

This may not be how it turns out for everyone, but don't stigmatize taking pills just because of some perceived weakness or dependence. Sometimes it's exactly the right choice. Sometimes psychedelics may be the right choice. Everyone is different, and will need different tools to help them deal with their stuff.

GreyEyedGhost ,

That's a fair stance. I'm not a fan of getting high, but I'm even less a fan of making people live the way I want to live. And we absolutely need to expand our toolset for dealing with neurochemistry imbalances that are leaving people unable to enjoy life, as well as changing our societal structures so we don't have so many people being unhappy for perfectly legitimate reasons.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Well, there was a sequel. Looks like it was direct to DVD so I'm sure it was impressive.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Their average height is much lower than people from South Korea. The most likely cause is malnutrition. When malnutrition affects even the military, your civilians aren't doing well.

If you're looking for sources, there are plenty of links should you search for "north korean vs south korean height". The difference is pretty dramatic for 75 years of isolation.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Most extremists are worrisome. Some cause more trouble for those around them than others, though. An extreme pacifist might get more abuse than someone who isn't, for instance, and that isn't great, but it's a more personal problem than trying to force your views and behaviors on others, which many other types of extremists try to do.

GreyEyedGhost ,

I was going to say they didn't used to require that, but that's about 20 years ago, now...

GreyEyedGhost ,

This is part of what helped the I love you virus to spread. Not too many idiots would open a file titled ILoveYou.txt.vbs, but even some smarter people will turn their brains off if they get a file titled ILoveYou.txt, possibly even me, except the first thing I do with a new computer is unhide file extensions.

Or my mom.

Me: Don't just click OK without reading the message first.

Mom: Don't click OK. Got it.

I didn't think he could look dumber, but then he goes and makes this face.

o_O

GreyEyedGhost ,

I forgot Zoolander existed until you did that. Good times!
