Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box ( lemmy.world ) Englisch

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

To me it seems they followed the hdd UUID style, rather than sda0 or hda0 that can change at boot you now have a fixed UUID to work with. I can see this being important on larger server networks

BCsven ,

It is but they change....so becarefilul with dd LOL

BCsven ,

Yep, i always type the line and take a break, and check the drives in another terminal first, before committing, but the web is full of people "argg I just dd the wrong drive".

BCsven ,

Tell my paetner the code to the bitcoin wallet is X1jH&t%@wuiPKlyw35ý...arrrghh gurgle gurlge

BCsven ,

I worked at a place that had lights like that, took forever for them to reach peak illumination

BCsven ,

I mean tiny bit is somewhat normal to correct for road camber or rutting...but those doing it back and forth like they are in a 70s pickup truck with fully worn out steering rack and bushings is pretty lame

BCsven ,

Could be, when I came to Canada and aome Canadians wore shoes in the house I was stunned. Like, it is just not right; Nevermind all the nasty shit you stepped in all day.

BCsven ,

Constant gear changes for no speed, acceleration or grade change of road

BCsven ,

Lego split screen did it well. side by side but if you move to some areas and other player does other things the vertical line starts to tilt and go horizontal, especially as you merge screens for co-op tasks

BCsven ,

But it is 14 for hotdog, fries and drink. sounds pretty much like any fastfood pricing tbh

BCsven ,

Same. We find restaurants a challenge because at home I make everthing from scratch, including sauces, and it is way above par...but also this week the fridge was low so i had a coffee and a large spoon of those fried dried onions for breakfast

BCsven ,

Good tip, thanks

The fuk? Please help me complete this insane captcha ( lemmy.world )

Fridge fridge hamburger truck truck... ??? What's the blue thing? I thought hamburger would be the answer, but it isn't? I just get the same captcha with the hamburger in a different place. WTAF is happening? And what's the blue thing? I refresh and it's the same icon in a different place. I AM HUMAN!

It was for my dad, he smoked from 16 till about mid 40s, then one day he said I'm done with the expense of this habit and never went back. My mom kept smoking till 60 then just gave it up. For some will power is enough

BCsven ,

I hear you. I had cancer in my neck and radiation to the throat, not from smoking ( i am a non smoker), but if I even smell smoke or on a heavy smokers clothing I start coughing. Same with smelling vinegar --go figure

BCsven ,

I haven't experienced that. What is the use-case that makes this happen?
I have one machine with only 8 gig and firefox is fine, and a 16 and 32 gig machine, firefox has never eaten 8 gigs

BCsven ,

It is Microsoft Teams now, but older installs had it called Skype for Business

BCsven ,

I hate it so much. I want to do one simple search. Instead I get bullshit ad google links that are irrelevant, then MS MS Edge pushes me into Copilot for more garbage, which I have to mouse out of.
Stract has become by search engine to get back the nostalgia of when the web wasn't all shit

BCsven ,

yep and running teams would have skype services running...here is MS PR

Transitioning from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams
To deliver smarter calling and meeting experiences with intelligent communications, we are bringing Skype for Business capabilities into Microsoft Teams

BCsven ,

Ubuntu is fine. But Caninical has made business decisions that are 100% inline with the typical foss intent.

BCsven ,

Same. I have used SolidWorks, SolidEdge, CATIA and Unigraphics/NX...freecad just frustrated me

BCsven ,

I stuggled with GIMP at first, it was super frustrating because it does UI things differently than other image tools.
i.e. in other tools your active layer masks your drag selection, and in GIMP I would constantly be grabbing lmages from another layer, till I realized the pixel under pointer determines what image is moved. That function can make you highly productive since you don't need to preset layer, but god was it enraging at first

BCsven ,

Zorin if you want a simple to use system, or with a different learning curve OpenSUSE if you want GUI configuration for everything that would be CLI based in another distro. YAST2-GUI GTK has everything covered from setting up services, tweaking kernel, to adding users, altering hardware setup, GUI package selections and snapshots for rollback if you accidentally wreck your system.

What is ironic is I bought a USB switcher for using Keyboard, Mouse etc with 4 systems; it has the USB ports upside-down.

BCsven ,

The irony is the USB keyboard- mouse -peripheral switcher I bought has the USB ports upside-down from normal

BCsven ,

Americans often call the wall plate the plugs, but technically in electeical hardware ordering catalogs the wall end is a female receptacle, and the cord end is a male plug

BCsven ,

Police forcibly removing peaceful protestors who say israel is commiting genocide. To me this is trying to silence critisicm of the intitution supporting it

BCsven ,

I have tried templeOS. It is amazing one guy built all that. It feels like it needs training sessions to make better use of it, and also it is wacky as hell

BCsven ,

Lol

BCsven ,

My 2010 arm board with 256MB ram running openmediavault and minidlna for music streaming.
Still lots of RAM left.

Just install security cameras showing you were always home

Isn't one cat, and the other a docker container of cat

BCsven ,

I asked copilot how to turn off copilot, and it responded with "It is probably time to change the question topics"

BCsven ,

It still amazes me that a country as tiny as the UK was this ambitious and powerful to expand like that. Like if any of those other countries banded together and were like Yeah, No, it's not on mate. Their numbers would eclipse the UK. maybe somebody with mechanics of colonization can explain how the UK was "succesful" at this venture

BCsven ,

I had no experience in nixOS, just went to the package website, it tells you exactly what to add to each section of the config.

BCsven ,

Or nice in person, then all the toxic bakstabbing behind the scenes.
This reads like the Sh*t My Dad says book. The author said it seemed harsh to some people, but the bonus was there was never any passive agressiveness, and you always knew exactly where you stood.
