Isn't Azerbaijan in Europe? :)

To my understanding it is in West Asia. No?

[Edit: haha you got me there, made me think it's considered europe

Europe is just a peninsula of Asia, like India. But the borders of Europe are sort of fuzzy. Technically, Azerbaijan is Europe, East Azerbaijan is close enough.

Azerbaijan is considered part of Asia, not Europe.

List of countries in Asia

The Caucasus Mountains are one of the agreed borders between Europe and Asia. Azerbaijan is south of the Caucausus Mountains, so it's in Asia.

Akshually, part of Azerbaijan is north of the Caucasus mountains, so it is at the very least a transcontinental country. 🤓

Other sources are talking about a hard landing rather than a crash. Apparently they were already on the descent and wind forced one helicopter down in a wooded area not too far off the landing zone. Still doesn't sound pretty, but at least more survivable than an outright crash.

The fact they are currently trying to find the crash site doesn't speak well for the unknown mortality of the occupants.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi crashed on Sunday, according to Iran’s state media and the country’s mission to the United Nations, but has yet to be found by search-and-rescue workers because of heavy fog.

The state news agency IRNA reported that an enormous search operation involving 16 teams was underway to locate the helicopter.

“Given the complexities of the region, connection has been difficult, and we are hoping that the rescue teams reach the helicopter and can give us more information,” Ahmad Vahidi, Iran’s interior minister, told state television.

Mr. Raisi was on an official visit to the province of Western Azerbaijan, a mountainous region in northwestern Iran.

A delegation of ministers traveled with him in a convoy of three helicopters, state media reported, adding that the two other aircraft had reached their destinations.

In addition to the president and the foreign minister, the governor of the province was also in the helicopter, which crashed in an area called Varzaghan, state media reported.
