@TechConnectify@mas.to

I'm that snarky, sometimes cranky YouTube person who told you about how dishwashers work.

I post many things which should not be taken too seriously (on account of the cranky snark thing). If you think I'm mad at you, I'm almost certainly not!

Friendly and helpful, if strongly opinionated.

@TechConnectify "I've always been fascinated with the idea of building 7-segment displays out of weird things. Imagine a clock where each segment is a 4 foot fluorescent tube"

yes
I have done this a looong time ago and it's a nightmare to get the high frequency drive of the tubes right and if I'd do it now I would probably predict when to change digits (if it's a clock) to pre-heat the filaments to strike the tubes flicker-free.

WBEZ just had a pledge drive and didn't meet their goals.

NPR has its problems, but your local station does really valuable journalism for your area and it's accessible to all.

If you haven't listened to your local affiliate or checked out their website, see what you think of their work. If you find it valuable, and you have the means, I think it's good to support such work. Especially now, good, accessible journalism covering your local area and not just national news is important to preserve

w7voa ,
@w7voa@journa.host avatar

@TechConnectify WBEZ is an incredibly valuable resource for the community. Management has terminated nearly 15% of the 62 unionized content creators while the executive payroll continues to climb and appears now to top $4 million annually. https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/363687394

@TechConnectify When I worked at WAMU, as it was climbing to become the most listened-to radio station in Washington, we had a staff of fewer than 20 people — everyone was either creating content, raising money or overseeing wires and cables (I produced the Diane Rehm Show by myself; the evening talk show was produced by the host). I looked at the WBEZ staff page today. (1/2)

So I just got back from a Menards run and I've noticed something fascinating:

Menards has always had a lot of store brands. But they're really pushing a new food brand called Marcella. Stuff like coffee, jams and jellies, prepared foods, sodas, etc. A lot of it is fairly unique - I bought a maraschino cherry cola on a whim and it was pretty great!

The weird part? They're pricing this in-house stuff higher than name brands. The soda was a tad more expensive than the Sprecher's next to it!

@TechConnectify There's an idea. If you have a friend that happens to be a facilities manager or a plumber, you should commission a birthday cake shaped like a urinal. Use yellow candles.

I'd like to tell a quick story about successful troubleshooting.

A few months ago I rented a scissor lift to install lighting at my new office. When it arrived, the delivery person gave me a quick demo and off he went.

Well, when I went to actually use it - the lift went up by about a foot then stopped and screamed beeps of terror. It was broken!

But the display on the control read "18"

Rather than call the rental company, I searched "sinoboom fault code 18" to see what that meant.

IetIesAai ,
@IetIesAai@mastodon-belgium.be avatar

@TechConnectify This!!! I work in IT, and while I appreciate not everyone is knowledgeable about IT, so many seem to lack even the beginning of any troubleshooting skills at all - not just when it comes to computer related things. Might be the reason people so often tell us there is "an error", without specifying any of the information that is right there - they don't seem to get no one has an innate knowledge of every problem and how to fix, but that there is a "process" for it.

I'm gonna be trying something different out tomorrow. Something between a re-do and a re-run.

It's a new shoot using almost entirely old B-roll and a significant re-work of the script. Basically, I wanted to combine the two dishwasher videos into one sub-half-hour video focused more on "tips and tricks" and less on my opinions on detergent (though you bet it still contains opinions on detergent!).

junio ,
@junio@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify
Your dishwasher videos were so good. I will be able to point to the shorter one for my friends less deep into the stuff. I would love a shorter combined video of the pinball videos in a couple of years to point to those friends too.

@TechConnectify Thanks! I hadn't seen either of the previous videos, and given their run-times, I might not have. This was great, and I'm already doing most of the tips, but I'm already looking forward to the hot-water trick.

My charge from last night on a 30A charger (7.2 kW at 240V).

This is why I'm always harping on the "stop installing giant charger circuits" thing! Even this is a luxury - I only charge about weekly or if I make a long trip.

For USians, a 10 gauge run of wiring will deliver 5 kW sustained. You'll only ever think that's slow if you drive a TON and/or have a really big vehicle.

Especially if you're thinking of DIYing an install, 10 gauge is so much easier to deal with.

onestar ,
@onestar@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify I absolutely appreciate all your videos on the topic. They have educated me a ton on how this all works. Besides the need for power/storage infastructure, education on EVs is paramount. It's gonna take decades to break old conceptions on how we "fill up" our cars. No one cares about fast charging their smartphone while they sleep for 8 hours at night.

hamakei ,
@hamakei@mas.to avatar

@TechConnectify We have a variable tariff where the cost per kW changes every 30 minutes based on wholesale price. So a 7kW charger might make more sense for us as it would allow us to pull as much charge as possible during the low periods.

Real thought:

What depresses me most about the state of the world at present is that we've stopped caring to live up to the spirit of our ideals.

When we fail them and are pressed, we can rationalize our terrible actions based on technicalities - and large swaths of our culture have normalized doing this very thing.

It is my most sincere hope that we can walk our way back from this. I see some signs of this, but would prefer to see many more.
