I'm that snarky, sometimes cranky YouTube person who told you about how dishwashers work.

I post many things which should not be taken too seriously (on account of the cranky snark thing). If you think I'm mad at you, I'm almost certainly not!

Friendly and helpful, if strongly opinionated.

Real thought:

What depresses me most about the state of the world at present is that we've stopped caring to live up to the spirit of our ideals.

When we fail them and are pressed, we can rationalize our terrible actions based on technicalities - and large swaths of our culture have normalized doing this very thing.

It is my most sincere hope that we can walk our way back from this. I see some signs of this, but would prefer to see many more.

@TechConnectify This got me thinking about if the glass got cracked what would happen to the sensor or if it would go haywire if, say, a rock flew up and chipped the glass near to the sensor.

@TechConnectify This was a neat video, and the best part about it for me was where you explain how glass-top stoves work primarily by /radiation/ instead of conduction (I would watch a whole separate video just on that). I feel better about ditching my gas stove after watching this. Thanks!

I don't know who needs to hear this (that's a lie: ~80% of drivers) but when you're in a turn lane or an exit only lane, you should still signal to confirm to those around you that you are aware of the lane you're in and where it's about to go.

jonas_trostle ,
@jonas_trostle@mastodon.online avatar

@TechConnectify my dad used to pull into the intersection, wait right until the last minute, then flick the turn light on and turn simultaneously. He liked to keep people on their toes

INeedaNewName ,

@TechConnectify It's funny, many times I will be in an exit only lane, and have my directional on. It crosses my mind routinely whether I need it on, or not, but I leave it on because why not. I learned to drive over 40 years ago, and we were taught to always use turn signals.

I have apparently developed a knack for going on a grocery run and loading my fridge up with stuff juuuuust before it hits a defrost cycle.

It's happened like three times this year!

TechConnectify OP ,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

@tomlegamer that's a cool label, I've never seen one here distinguish the defrost heaters as a load. All the ones I've seen just list a max current draw, which is always during defrost.

IIRC my fridge says it's a ~4A device, 400-500W ish, but plugged into a power meter it only draws about 100W when running

I put my thoughts on the skeet place and I want to highlight this reply I got.

I think a large number of people who are active here specifically need to hear this perspective.

TechConnectify OP ,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

@teotwaki And, not to put too fine a point on it, but when you approach the scale of a 2-million sub YouTube channel - algorithms simply are a must.

Mastodon leadership needs to engage with that fact if they want the platform to be usable for folks like me.

It's still alright for me at the moment, but I think that's purely down to how small Fedi remains at this point. I've got something of a reputation here when across all of YT the vast majority don't know who I am.

FifiSch ,
@FifiSch@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify @teotwaki I personally don't think Mastodon will ever offer this functionality as Mr. Rochko seems very deeply invested in this idea of early Twitter being the perfect social network.

But I also believe that as the ActivityPub itself is gaining a momentum, these options will sooner than later become available either via third-party services or natively by other fedi networks.

In the latest edition of "complicated communication misfires I want to pick at," remember that your knowledge isn't always common.

People form simple opinions about complex issues. The mind you may find yourself arguing with doesn't necessarily have ANY awareness of the complexities and nuances of the thing they're arguing about. They may very well be parroting talking points which were fed to them.

If you're arguing presuming they know the roots of a systemic problem, you could be wrong.

TechConnectify OP ,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

And consider what that looks like from the other side:

"Suddenly this person is bringing up outside issues to muddy the conversation! The people I watch on the news warned me about this. They won't stay on topic because they're disingenuous and they know it."

We have to listen to each other and engage with the individual things we are wrong about. We have to be very careful about labeling an entire person as "wrong." That presumes they cannot change or improve themselves: a very dangerous idea

@TechConnectify

"Suddenly this person is bringing up outside issues to muddy the conversation! The people I watch on the news warned me about this. They won't stay on topic because they're disingenuous and they know it."

I feel this with AI discourse on Mastodon. Virtually every anti-AI post that I see runs on emotion, and when I try to explain A) the physics of how new AI models are based on how our own brains work and B) Technology isn't evil, Capitalism is,

The emotional reaction from them to me is amplified tenfold. People are very unwilling to admit they are just fleshy computers and they hold that it's impossible for anything to surpass their own brains. And if they DO somehow concede that, the response is always of the form "the AI doesn't have a soul, therefore, I hate it."
