So I just got back from a Menards run and I've noticed something fascinating:

Menards has always had a lot of store brands. But they're really pushing a new food brand called Marcella. Stuff like coffee, jams and jellies, prepared foods, sodas, etc. A lot of it is fairly unique - I bought a maraschino cherry cola on a whim and it was pretty great!

The weird part? They're pricing this in-house stuff higher than name brands. The soda was a tad more expensive than the Sprecher's next to it!

@TechConnectify what a weird jar shape. It's almost like one of those round bottom shot glasses that you have to finish in one go because it'll fall over. Hope it's good if it turns out you need to chug it

@mattgrayyes in high school we did a trip to AmGen and then did some PCR as an exercise. In retrospect, I don't know that they said anything about cancer or robots. I may have been introduced to a supervillain lair at a young age

I am by no means a USA-phile but one advantage of being over here is large physical shops with stock you can browse.

One disadvantage is impulse buying. I now own this guitar strap.

@mattgrayyes I know that floor. Now I can test my theory that all guitar centers are actually the same place connected by some wormhole arrangement. If I go to my local, somebody will have finally bought that fuzzy guitar strap.

The latest episode of the Urbanist Agenda with @GarethDennis is now available on all podcast platforms!

We talk about level boarding for trains: why you should want it, and why it doesn't happen more often.

By the end of this conversation you'll realise that level boarding isn't a "nice to have", is something we need to demand for all transit projects everywhere.

@notjustbikes @GarethDennis kinda weird that a necessary design constraint that doesn't cost more beyond narrowing the available equipment has been a thing for new construction. My city's light rail requires an awkward ramp setup at one end of each platform because reasons

I'd like to tell a quick story about successful troubleshooting.

A few months ago I rented a scissor lift to install lighting at my new office. When it arrived, the delivery person gave me a quick demo and off he went.

Well, when I went to actually use it - the lift went up by about a foot then stopped and screamed beeps of terror. It was broken!

But the display on the control read "18"

Rather than call the rental company, I searched "sinoboom fault code 18" to see what that meant.

@TechConnectify if I were to create a college program in troubleshooting it would be a double major in library science and either one of the wonkier sciences where they build most of their lab equipment, or technical theater.
Communities could fund scholarships for these kids to create a corps of people good at fixing stuff

If anyone has a service manual for an Epson TM-C3500 label printer I'd very much appreciate a copy please.
I bought one on eBay untested (with my fingers crossed) and it turns out it's not a happy bunny.

Print head is clogged, the printer has done the 5 head cleaning cycles it'll let you do and the screen says Service Mode. booo.

[edit: yes I’ve found all the other Googlable manuals. It’s the service manual I’m looking for]

The new Prime Minister of the Netherlands has a degree in urban planning, so that's something, I guess.

I'm just glad it's not Wilders.

@notjustbikes I fully expected the twist to be that his degree was from Arizona State Univ. School of Highway Development.

Crooks plant backdoor in software used by courtrooms around the world

It's unclear how the malicious version of JAVS Viewer came to be.

@arstechnica since US court rooms are relentlessly analog, I suspect the result isn't much other than gaining access to documents and testimony that might otherwise be under seal. In other countries, it might be a bigger problem

@TechConnectify not sure, since there wasn't a sign beyond 'Music' on my hometown dingy stoner guitar store, but I suspect that they would've had that name if they'd had the capacity to think of it
