Interesting reusability designed into this Sony remote.
The front metal bit looks like this.
but the plastic is just a bunch of generic holes which can have sliders placed/not placed at different locations.

The inside of the same remote. The buttons are laid out in a grid, and there's holes for every possible button placement, but unused placements don't have sliders in them

@foone I’ve seen similar things on rubber button remotes where the rubber membrane is the same, they just clip off the ones they’re not using.

every time I need to design a PCB I'm like "this'll be quick and easy, I won't need to design any footprints or symbols at all!"

and then an hour later I'm staring into the Kicad footprint editor and crying

I wonder how well your average computer motherboard would handle being in a pressurized air environment.
Like your sea level pressure is like 14 PSI, and inside a car tire is like 30 PSI.
I wonder if any components would fail at the latter pressure?

bytex64 ,
@bytex64@awesome.garden avatar

@foone I would guess that most components would be fine, since they’re made of fully solid materials. Some research indicates that electrolytic capacitors will have a problem at that pressure, mostly in that it will force contaminants past the seals. Probably will have similar problems with batteries.

@foone Honestly a fan of pretty much every decade of their design.

Bad idea for a scifi story:
In 1860, a paranormal investigator discovers that there's a sun-worshiping cult that sacrifices a virgin to The Sun every year. It turns out last year, they messed up the ritual, and the victim escaped at the last moment.

Cue the Carrington event. A massive geomagnetic storm that caused auroras as far south as Colombia.

The investigator is then paid to infiltrate the cult and disrupt their ritual every time, as it saves Western Union a lot on electrical costs.

@foone Reading about the Carrington Event.

> It was observed and recorded independently by British astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson—the first records of a solar flare.

So if it was discovered by two guys named Richard, why is it called the Carrington Event and not…

I was trying to talk about omegaverse on Tumblr and my phone's autocorrect coined the word "usb gender" which I think is something we should do more with.

@foone my gender: mini-B on one end and a four pin DuPont on the other

this electrical device is a special sort of terrible: They labeled the polarity of the DC power jack, but not the voltage (or current, for that matter)

I wonder if anyone has proposed a PNG/EXIF extension to let you embed an image description in an image file. It'd live with the image so as you upload it to different sites, the description stays with it

bytex64 ,
@bytex64@awesome.garden avatar

@foone It appears it’s already part of the PNG spec. https://www.w3.org/TR/png/#11textinfo

Wasn't there some browser that let you have bottom-tabs instead of the top-tabs?

bytex64 ,
@bytex64@awesome.garden avatar

@foone Back in the 90s GNN shipped a browser with bottom tabs. Sadly I think it has been lost to time.
