“Immensely disappointing”: Nike killing app for $350 self-tying sneakers

Without updates or ability to download after August, app will become useless.

@arstechnica this is the same kind of B.S. that kills off potentially amazing ideas and transfprmative products. It makes me think of my amazing Pebble smartwatch, which faded into uselessness after Fitbit swooped into buy it and kill it off as a competitor. A community-sourced hack allowed it to live a brief afterlife, but it was never the same. Would Nike allow an open source 3rd party to pick up maintenance and development of the app?... most assuredly not.

The president ordered a board to probe a massive Russian cyberattack. It never did.

The Cyber Safety Review Board missed an opportunity to prevent future attacks, experts say.

@arstechnica So the leadership of this Cyber Safety Review Board basically thumbed its nose at the president and sabotaged its own mission from the very beginning.

I don't trust this guy Silvers even a little bit. He's arrogant at a minimum, and possibly compromised.

Middle schoolers lash out at 20 teachers with disturbing fake TikTok accounts

Legal options limited to stop fake TikTok accounts harming teachers, school says.

@arstechnica Am I the only one who is somewhat surprised at the level of outrage? Middle schoolers are going to do middle schooler things. Surprised pikachu that they use today's technology as a digital bathroom wall.

They ought to be disciplined but does it really warrant press and police attention?

Similar insinuations made it to the print school newspaper back when I was in high school. It was funny to me at the time.

@arstechnica solution is easy- ban the middle schoolers 😆

Notepad’s spellcheck and autocorrect are rolling out to everybody after 41 years

It's still bare-bones by most standards, but Notepad has evolved a lot recently.

@arstechnica This is why I now have to install VIM every time I need to change some text files on a Windows VM.

nazokiyoubinbou ,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@arstechnica Seems silly to do it internally at all now that modern operating systems have means of connecting external spellcheckers to virtually anything. Linux has done that forever. Windows basically does it on most modern things almost the same way.

That said, at this point everyone in Windows should just use Notepad++ instead anyway. Simple, light, efficient, yet can do basic simple things that Notepad won't do (also FOSS!)

If a single person or a group of people killed 346 humans they would be locked up for good and prevented from doing more harm.

But because this mass murder was committed by a company it gets to pay a fine and continue to trade on its legacy of corruption and killing.

@arstechnica Here's an idea: get rid of pointless, wasteful auto racing completely. We need to go beyond this garbage. You wanna play with your toy cars, play Forza or Gran Turismo or something similar.

@arstechnica I'm always happy to see innovations in motorsports. New tech will make it's way down to general vehicles over time so it's good to see them trying more sustainable materials. I think it'll be a while before we see tech in the current series. The article specifically calls out superspeedways for the lack of regeneration, but regen alone won't get the cars through a full 300+ mile race.

@arstechnica The average age of a Formula One driver is 27.6 years. It is a young man's sport because reaction time is a key part of it. Brad Pitt is 6o years old. I will doubtless be accused of ageism, but in the words of Joe Biden, "Come on, man!"

The greening of planes, trains, and automobiles

https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/07/the-greening-of-planes-trains-and-automobiles/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

Spoiler: We do not need one drop of "fuels" for cars, trucks and trains that are highly inefficient and / or lead to even more desastrous exploitation of and pollution to the environment.

smxi ,
@smxi@fosstodon.org avatar

@arstechnica saying we need x or y while suggesting the set of solutions includes cars suggests what we really need is not going to happen. Unfortunately that seems to be what is happening, we keep raising the bar, not realizing we need to start lowering it to get anywhere. It comes down to energy used per passenger mile. This is all well understood. A 2 to 5 ton rolling brick of batteries does slightly drop CO2 per mile but can't scale like mas transit.
