Why do so many people feel bothered about this? It's not like the comunity is associated with a political party or something due to this. Also it's a meme comunity and this is a meme, what did you expect?

savvywolf ,
@savvywolf@pawb.social avatar

Eh. Furry is one of the few punching bags that people feel it's safe to attack nowadays. I've seen some people say that that attitude just a modern expression of homophobia.

TimeSquirrel ,
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

I feel if you're still making fun of furries at this point and not just ignoring them and moving on with your life, you need to pull yo ass out of 2005 and get new jokes. That Vanity Fair article was like almost 20-fucking years ago.

Edit: I take that back after looking it up, it was OVER 20 fucking years ago.

ICastFist , in I know what you are! You're a Linuxkisser!
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

That's how it all starts. First, you just find anthropomorphic characters "hot". Next, you realize you were gay all along. Everything afterwards happens in a flash. Before you know it, you've picked a side in the systemd wars, you swear by ZFS, have memorized ESC :q! by heart and changed your 'sona into a FOSSa

dream_weasel , in I know what you are! You're a Linuxkisser!

I like Linux. I am not gay, not trans, not furry, and I absolutely hate the shit out of anime/manga/anything in that shit art style. I have a wife and kids.

Idk how to fit in; I'm immune to linux side effects somehow.

natebluehooves ,

Sounds like serious insecurity. A lot of these memes are more along the lines of queer folk finding an accepting community and having fun posting things that would normally result in cyber bullying.

Also the boykisser thing has always just been a joke. Don’t take it as an insult or something.

dream_weasel ,

No it's lack of delineation.

I want linux memes about linux. Period. When I come to Lemmy I don't want sports, I don't want yiff, I don't want anime, I don't want social issues, I'm here for the linux.

I'm glad people are finding a place, but I'm not sorry if internet snark is just too much to handle when it looks off topic.

ace , in We don't talk about #3671.

Let me tell you about Bumblebee and their issue , though that one's even worse seeing as installing system packages are done as root.

(Their install/update commands included rm -rf /usr /lib/nvidia-current/xorg/xorg)

CmdrKeen OP ,
@CmdrKeen@lemmy.today avatar

Perhaps it runs on a Raspberry Pi?

ApathyTree ,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Or orange pi. Banana pi.

The best thing I learned when writing this comment (because I know there are other fruity labeled pi computers) is that you can look up “other fruit pi” and actually find results. Semi-relevant ones. (I use ecosia, not google/bing/askjeves, so ymmv)

Franconian_Nomad , in I know what you are! You're a Linuxkisser!

Nothing against this, it takes all sorts and stuff
you know.

Can a linux/systemd nerd explain what the error is? I know it's a shutdown sequence, but I'm curious on the fault

earthquake ,
@earthquake@lemm.ee avatar

These kinds of public errors are almost always a hard drive failure.

CameronDev ,

It is actually a boot failure. Normally the kernel reads some config from the initrd (the bootloader loads initrd and passes it to the kernel - thanks dan) and then does a bunch of setup stuff, and then it mounts the actual root filesystem, and then switches to using that. In this case, the root filesystem has failed to mount.

Hardware failure is most likely the cause, but misconfiguration can also make this happen. Probably hardware though.

If its misconfiguration, an admin can reattempt to mount the root drive on /new_root, and then ctrl-d to get the init system to try again

ELI5: couldnt open C:/ drive

Edit: clarified what loads the initrd - as per dans comment.

lemmesay OP , in I love vim

explanation for the command ci":
c: change. analogous to delete(d) followed by insert(i)
i: inside
": the double quote
so, it's basically change inside double quote(easier to remember as it sounds exactly what it does).
you can similarly do di((delete inside parenthesis).

an inferior alternative on vscodium would be shift + alt + right/left arrow

What distro?

einfach_orangensaft OP ,

manjaro

fixed the problem by deleting mime cache and rebuilding it

WeLoveCastingSpellz ,

"manjaro" explains the problem very well actually

avapa ,

Seriously. I used Manjaro for a short period about 5 or 6 years ago but ran into so many issues with it. Vanilla Arch on the other hand is very forgiving in my experience. I have a second desktop PC with Arch installed and I only update that machine once every couple of months when I actually need to use it. In my four years of doing that I never had an update break my system.

kattenluik ,

I've used and come back to Arch for nearly 8 years now and Manjaro has always been a broken distribution and genuinely gives Arch a bad rep.

Arch has always been a very stable daily driver for me, never breaking and never having issues with it. I'm always confused on what people are doing when they have issues with their entire distro breaking, especially since you pick all your packages and such anyways.

It's disgusting that this post has not been removed, has a 96% postive vote ratio, has over 1K upvotes and is sitting at the top of All after almost a day.

This isn't a Linux meme. It's a celebration of abuse, abusive behaviour and abusive people.

All the people ITT condoning or making even the slightest accommodations for this behaviour ought to be ashamed and need to take a good, long look in a mirror.

What are the moderators of this community thinking? Are you reading this stuff? Do some of you agree with any of it?

Of all the things to celebrate about Linus and Linux this is not one of them.

There is no value in leaving this post up. There is nothing to be learned or gained by revealing just how gross some supposed Linux supporters may be.

Does anyone ITT seriously think this is how Linus or Linux developers want to be remembered and celebrated for their dedication and decades of toil?

Do you think anyone that's been on the receiving end of this kind of abuse on the job or in the home wants to jump onto Lemmy today to see this celebration of abusive and awful behaviour.

There are no excuses to be made. It doesn't matter that this happened many years ago and that Linus has managed to overcome behaving like this. The post itself is now the issue.

The many comments that have made even the slightest excuse for this kind of behaviour are awful and damaging to the reputations of Linus, Linux and the Linux community.

__matthew__ ,

While Linus went overboard (as he has a history of doing, and as has also caused negativity to the community), this post is still very well liked because it appears to be a strong example of someone calling out the BS that a lot of developers like to throw around. No one's going to join in a circle celebrating Linus picking on some first time contributor who didn't know any better, but that's how it sounds like you're interpreting the post.

To add some context, there's a toxic superiority complex that many developers have where they jump to blame others for issues that actually relate to their code. You can see this anywhere from developers who immediately blame users without investigating to software developers within companies who are quick to pass off issues as not their team's problem.

So, in this example Linus is actually calling one of these developers out, which is why the post is very well-received.

veni_vedi_veni , in Linus does not fuck around

Ugh, having been on the receiving end, this type of belittlement is the worst, and breeds resentment, factionalism, and a host of other toxic elements in the workplace.

Irrespective of the validity of his critique, prima donna developers are the worst and I would start looking for jobs elsewhere because programming is already stressful enough, don't want to start worrying about the people.
