Push a LiveUSB inside her. It's not rape if you are a sysadmin. Let's see if you find something's fishy down there.

My first Linux install, I downloaded some tutorial from somewhere, can't remember where (maybe someone on IRC shared it 🤔... IDK, I can't remember), and this is litelarly what it said 😂.

You have to be prepared when installing Linux. Take a week or two off work or school and make sure you have the following things at your disposal.

  • Find as many bootable floppy's and as many different dostro CDs as possible. Why? The boot floppy from Debian might work with Suse, but not the Debian CD.

  • Make sure you have at least two CD drives and floppy drives at your disposal. The more, the better. Why? You'll probably burn out the first ones while trying to figure out which boot floppy goes with which distro.

  • Have coffee at your disposal all the time. You're at the bottom of the pot? Pour that in your mug and put a new one on the kettle.

  • Stock up on as many different kinds of alcohol you can find, preferably strong stuff. Trust me, you'll need it.

Linux runs on literally anything. The hardware doesn't matter too much these days, but which distro you pick does. I would say to just load a flash drive with a live image of a distro you think looks cool and see how you like it on a trial basis. Try a couple of them before you reqlly make a decision and then load the full image

You know how sometimes old documents would reuse paper by turning it sideways and writing perpendicularly on top of the old writing? Let's make a window manager that does that, overlap the contents of all your windows at different angles

The absolute disregard for the meme format here. I'm too high for this.

Artyom ,

It's a valid use of the format if you use a tilting window manager to view it.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

If we could get edge-to-edge displays, hexagonal panels with a spherical radius will be the next big thing for battle stations.

(By spherical, I mean its curved so it can be tiled into a sphere.)

The steam deck does have a gyroscope for sensing rotation... Just saying.

TimeSquirrel ,
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

That feature has always been annoying to me, even on phones. I always turn it off because "I" will control whether my screen rotates or not. Maybe sometimes I don't want it to rotate when I turn the phone (like when I'm viewing building plans at work and want to orient the screen with how I'm looking at the building I'm standing in).

nekusoul ,
@nekusoul@lemmy.nekusoul.de avatar

Not sure how standard this is, but on Pixel phones the default is no auto rotation, but when the phone detects rotation it will display a tiny rotate button in the corner of the screen for just a few seconds. Best of both worlds IMO.

taladar ,

That rotate button is incredibly annoying. I turned off auto-rotate for a reason and the button obscures other information displayed in that corner of the screen. Wish I could turn the button off too.

Why is Ubuntu getting so much hate? it was a good entrance for many people into the Linux world

Swiggles ,

Emphasis on it was. It started to go downhill with Amazon integration and now we have paid security updates. They are holding back developed and available security packages for their OS!

There is no way to still recommend Ubuntu. No need to even talk about the other questionable decisions like snap.

Papercrane ,

Isn't Linux mint an Ubuntu fork? That gets recommended to tons of people who seek an entrance into the Linux world. Is it as bad as Ubuntu?

WeLoveCastingSpellz ,

It is a fork, meaning its like ubuntu but with the bullshit that makes ubuntu bad removed. It is completly safe but if you wanna stay clear of any trace of ubuntu at all there is also a debian based version of mint

0x4E4F OP ,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Debian Mint is the way to go now for entry in Linux if you ask me.

LMDE and PopOS are my consistent recommendations to newcomers. If one doesn’t work, the other will.

0x4E4F OP ,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

I would recommend only community maintained distros at this point... seing as how RH and Canonical went to the dark side for some things, I'd rather not recommend something maintaned by a company.
