Personally I think programming languages should always be uppercase or always be lowercase. No proper noun programming languages.
It's python and ruby, not Python and Ruby.
It's C and APL, not c and definitely not Apl.

Swift and Java? Wrong. Bad programming languages. Make SWIFT an acronym and understand java is a programming language and Java™ is a product

I'm writing rust without fully understanding the language. Pray for me.

Actually I guess that's true of most language I program in? Like, I'm sure there's some obscure python syntax or behavior I can't remember, despite calling myself a python programmer and having done it professionally for many years.

but my point was more that I barely know any rust. there's entire parts of syntax I don't understand yet. but I'm coding anyway!

@foone this is most people with most languages

this is also why Amaranth is like 60% hand-holding

Am I misremembering, or was there some cryptographic system where you could set up a container and have two keys to it, each of which provided a different file with no way for anyone to prove the other file/key existed?

ie, if the authorities forced you to decode it, you could give them the fake key and they'd only get the fake contents, and they couldn't prove that you have another key which reveals other contents?

Edit: it was truecrypt/veracrypt. Thanks!

whitequark ,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@foone but you still need to give some people the key, right

whitequark ,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@foone oh, that's wild

that said... if you can see it often enough through casual play you can definitely brute-force it easily

(this presumes that there is a checksum that tells you whether the secret level is decoded correctly or not. if there isn't it's equivalent to generative art, i think)

despite having never shot a gun i will get very annoyed at imprecise use of gun-related terminology on the internet, because i find these engineered mechanisms fascinating and an interesting object of study

engineered objects consist of parts each of which serve a purpose! they're not just things with an aestheti[gets shot]

whitequark OP ,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

i feel the same way about programming languages

whitequark OP ,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

but also have you ever looked into how absurdly difficult it is to make a reliable automatic feeding and extraction mechanism? like when i was a child i didn't care for guns much but i was wondering how you'd design such a thing

many years later i have a much more detailed understanding of how one works, but i still wonder how you'd design such a thing

especially with like, no high speed cameras, no CAM/CAE, nothing but your mind and a sheet of paper

a beautiful form of applied mathematics

whitequark OP ,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

and a lot of trial and error

i wonder if i can read, like, winchester's lab notebook or something, to understand the thought process behind the design

Idea: a USB-controlled gun, but the USB protocol implementation is the most cursed part.
Any ideas? I have a better one, but I'll start with that it's a USB printer class. Every time you tell it to print a page, it fires

One thing that is cool about LLM‘s right now is how there’s actual competition, the likes of which I haven’t seen in other fields lately.

I’ve been enjoying GPT-4o, now Claude Sonnet 3.5 is out and I can just switch to it with one line of config. Until next time.

@fasterthanlime can you post the code as well?
