I'm currently looking into what's the best way to support SVM/USM in #rusticl and one thing I'm wondering about is, if there are any drawbacks doing:

mmap(some_chosen_address, ram_size, PROT_NONE, MAP_PRIVATE | MAP_ANONYMOUS | MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE, 0, 0);

and reserve a lot of virtual memory, and then suballocate SVM allocations out of this region with "PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE" and "MAP_FIXED"?

Alternatively, I was considering allocating smaller heaps on demand.

@karolherbst I'm sleep deprived today, but doesn't FIXED_NOREPLACE cause pinning, i.e. you can't move or swap it?

If I'm misremembering, then that's probably fine. Look at the heap allocation in "top" of old Golang programs 😄

Some people are really just huge assholes not worth engaging with. They'll deflect any criticism as they are all-knowing and always right.

Just block&report and move on.

And if you want to spend the time, you can also find terrible older posts and report them while at it 🙃

I think that's something the fediverse has to learn to deal with, to just take away the reach of massive assholes instead of risking people engaging getting harassed by their fan base in retaliation.

@karolherbst this is why I have a specific rule: with very few exceptions, I give everyone who has a bad take and I choose to engage with exactly one "good faith" reply, and a chance to demonstrate that I read them wrong or they haven't thought about it, and I can help them do so

Quite often, this is actually helpful to one of both of us. But if they don't listen and keep going off, onto the block list they go

I'm trying to get better at delivering "bad news" earlier.

If I'm not gonna make it to an event, or won't have time to finish a task, I don't wait until the last minute to communicate that — I let them know as soon as I know.

Feels awkward, but more respectful of their time.
