@arstechnica I suspect that the He leaks are not what is really worrying NASA but rather the fact that five thrusters stopped working on approach to ISS.
It would be a little difficult if half the thrusters stopped working as they got ready for reentry.

I just was thinking that my mouse wasn't tracking very well and automatically flipped it over so I could try cleaning the ball.

it's 2024, of course it doesn't have a ball, this is an optical mouse!

but apparently my computer reflexes are stuck in 1996

@foone cleaning the mouse poop from the rollers was a regular task :)

Here's something cool I never realized existed:

PCBs distributed through magazines!

@foone I'd forgotten those boards in the mags back in the 1970s and 1980s. A real trip down memory lane.

@arstechnica This story mirrors the issues Boeing have had in the airliner industry. Mentour Now has just done a really good video on the structural airliner division issues.

The short summary is you don't run a business which has 15 year project development cycles solely on the basis of quarterly profits announcements and get rid of divisions which make key parts of your core product.

AI in space: Karpathy suggests AI chatbots as interstellar messengers to alien civilizations

Andrej Karpathy muses about sending a LLM binary that could "wake up" and answer questions.

@arstechnica That idea sounds suicidal! We can't even rely on a LLM to answer simple questions accurately.

“Concerning” spread of bird flu from cows to cats suspected in Texas

Mammal-to-mammal transmission raises new concerns about the virus's ability to spread.

@arstechnica
It is concerning that the H5N1 has spread to multiple herds of cattle around several states in a few weeks.

The really worrying part of this story is how it spread from the cattle to the cats in about a week killing 50% of the poor things.

Several dairy workers also appear to have caught it too. At this rate of spread and across mammals it could make the COVID outbreak look tame.

Time to start stockpiling again?
