We need to start teaching classes on AI not because AI is the future, but because as far as I can tell the majority of people are literally incapable of understanding what an AI actually does.
It feels like when people see ChatGPT mis-answer something they think "ah must just be a bug, it'll get fixed".
No. That's not a bug. It gives bogus answers because it doesn't do anything but generate a sentence that looks similar to what an answer to your question could look like

Lyude OP ,

When you ask the AI a question, it has no understanding of the question. It has a set of words, and it runs those words in that pattern through a series of neural weights - which point it to what it needs to generate a similar looking answer. At no point did it Google anything, nor did it look up a database, all it did was go through training data to generate a similar looking sentence. It is the literal equivalent of having a monkey bash a keyboard until you get a novel

Lyude OP ,

Can the monkey write a novel, given an infinite amount of time and stamina! Yeah it can, it'll write the best novel ever. It will also have literally no understanding of the novel or what it did because we just rolled the dice enough times to get the 0.00001% chance of a full on novel.
the only difference with AI is that the probability of a correct looking response is higher then the probability of the monkey typing the novel

Also when I say incapable - I mean they're getting tricked. Like this is clearly tapping into the part of people that tries to anthropomorphize things into our own image. We see something that makes things that look like sentences so we as humans are naturally inclined to try to think of it as another human.

@karolherbst yeah we really aren't ready for AI as a society. I'm more scared of the brain drain this is going to cause from all of the people who now think that they can genuinely have a career completely handled by ChatGPT, or the educators who apparently don't understand the issue isn't plagiarism - the issue is using AI in scientific endeavors at all

"oh so you want to tell the Democrats that you'll vote for them no matter what?"
listen I get your criticism but I don't follow what makes you think there's going to be an election after 2025 if trump wins.

slack: let's train a model on everyone's conversation
ignoring the fact I uh, am not at all clear on what you even be training a model for here, don't a bunch of corporations filled with confidential information they think is REALLY important pay you large sums of money
like it's one thing to steal users data, like yeah that's bad but you know corporations will just keep doing it and not care, but uh. slack I think you're stealing other corporations info here and they have money, a lot of it, a lot of it which you depend on coincidentally

Lyude OP ,
@Lyude@queer.party avatar

really what are they even training a model for like I know we ask this question every time but I'm really scratching my head trying to figure out what on earth slack's imaginary AI offering is going to be
an AI companion for lonely executives???
what service does it provide

Lyude OP ,
@Lyude@queer.party avatar

someone said "productivity insights" which is a nothing statement but at the same time is definitely 100% what they're probably going to be offering

Can anyone else running spotify on Linux confirm if the spotify flatpak is now broken?
Launching it no longer works, it just keeps spitting this out in journalctl:
May 16 17:47:25 emerald org.gnome.Software.desktop[4288]: /app/extra/bin/spotify: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcurl.so.4: no version information available (required by /app/extra/bin/spotify)
