@arstechnica Modern computers have done with the optical disk drive what they previously did with the floppy drive, though you can get a portable DVD burner for about $30. Even new game consoles don’t have the drives, at least not the base versions. Discs may not be dead, but support for them is dying fast.

T-Mobile users thought they had a lifetime price lock—guess what happened next

"T-Mobile will never change the price you pay," the carrier told users in 2017.

@arstechnica We joined early last year and our price went up a couple times. They were good under John Legere. I don’t even know who’s driving the bus now.

After you die, your Steam games will be stuck in legal limbo

So much for your descendants posthumously clearing out that massive backlog...

@arstechnica I'm kind of okay with this. Steam sales are common and deep enough that we get our money's worth out of the games. Passing our games onto somebody else is not really an issue to me.

That said, when I pass, I plan to leave my wife my password manager's master password. So if she wants to continue playing my games, she can. The idea of passing down a digital library for 10 generations or something doesn't seem plausible.

Sky voice actor says nobody ever compared her to ScarJo before OpenAI drama

OpenAI’s feud with Scarlett Johansson could cost Hollywood AI deals.

@arstechnica Why is the voice actor anonymous? That's a bit sus without explanation.

Sounds like someone is working as an impersonator and doesn't want to be involved if there is a lawsuit. This person reminds me of, in the Rockband games, the songs "made famous by" because they couldn't license the originals (or source the masters).

As for the ScarJo stuff... that name's been around for years. Ars didn't make it up. That's just a familiar name for her. Nothing more to it.

Intel reportedly blames motherboard makers for Core i9 CPU crashes

Motherboard makers "disable thermal and power delivery safeguards" by default.

@arstechnica With too many cooks in the kitchen and no one wants to admit fault, it falls to the buyer. If I have an issue, it’s either Apple or it’s me, sometimes it’s even obvious. I like the idea of versatility in PC and Android, but I don’t see the actual benefit.

There’s never been a better time to get into Fallout 76

Fallout 76 is good now. Actually, it’s always been good.

@arstechnica Wow. Bethesda not only censoring criticism of their games on their social media channels, they're also taking out ads on tech sites. Kind of icky.

Isn't there some kind of journalistic ethic about declaring when something is a paid promotion?

@arstechnica I've been told I'm an unconventional Fortnite player. Having come up on Unreal Engine since the first one, I love how Fortnite plays, minus all that extra stuff. Do your dances, build your bases, have fun with all those gimmick weapons. I'm gonna circle around with the best pistol or SMG I can find and pick you off like Deus Ex taught me. Ideally, with a cannon fodder partner doing the same thing you are.

Rumored new 4K Chromecast may fix long-standing storage issues

It's still $50, would have a new remote, and will hopefully not have 8GB of storage.

@arstechnica Android TV is still a laggy mess even with good specs. And the new Apple TV box is down around $100 and is amazing, has 64GB storage to start. Good device even for those outside the Apple ecosystem. The only advantage I get as an iPhone user is the built-in software remote. Oh, and I can AirPlay to it, but I never use that. You can put SteamLink on it and stream to it from a PC. Also, no ads in the UI.
