@arstechnica I think it's more like, "After reading the news, we realize we put ourselves at risk of costly lawsuit if we don't at least ask first." US law provides for compulsory licensing. YouTube doesn't really HAVE to ask. (Neither does Weird Al; he's just very nice.) But the onerous obligations and likely cost of CL are greater than just getting permission, maybe for a much lower cost.

@arstechnica strange how copyright applies to music when it comes to AI training but attempts to apply it to anything else it seems “difficult” 🤔

Is it just that there are few enough large copyright owners that any one of them is a serious opponent to the copyright ignoring AI bros?
