Current status: doing my first ever Time Machine backup to a 512GB microSD (because that's all I had on hand that was big enough)

@fasterthanlime TM backups are easily corrupted. After years of issues, I no longer trust them as a primary/only backup. For file-level backups I use Arq to Google Cloud's archive storage class, which is quite affordable and much more reliable if you actually need it.

@dpom Giving Arq a try right now — it’s faster to backup to AWS S3 Glacier with Flexible Retrieval than it is to write to this microSD card 🥲

Thanks for the recommendation!

@fasterthanlime Glad to help! Some day Apple will give Time Machine the attention it needs, but for now it's just the absolute cruftiest :)

@fasterthanlime Over the last few years, I switched my machines over to NVMe drives, which are noiseless and faster than they really need to be. They were also reasonably priced if you shop for deals.

Here is my write-up in case it's interesting. https://micro.webology.dev/2024/03/28/on-backups-and.html
