It's funny how I've seen multiple people talking about how Microsoft Recall doesn't take pictures of DRM media, as if this was a conscious decision the Recall team made, and not just a natural consequence of how screenshots already work on modern windows.

@foone As a software engineer, I am pretty aware that they probably didn't have to do anything special to not screencap DRMed videos.

Nevertheless, I still find it worthwhile to point out, that Recall works in a way that protects the interest of certain people while creating huge privacy issues. And while the Recall team probably could not do much about the first point, they decided to not care about the second one.

@foone I suppose you haven't seen the discourse about how the folks telling us that are missing the point and being useful fools...

The point/the claim isn't that they made a special exception in Recall not to screenshot locked-down media. The point is the extent they went to to enforce the interests of movie industry when that was engineered, vs the complete lack of attention to anyone standing up for users and how to protect their interests against Recall.

@foone yeah it's literally just a case of "the DXGI stack can't see it because the image isn't decoded until it hits the hardware", and naturally they're using DXGI for the screenshot stuff because that's where everything gets composited.

@foone I understand why it's happening, but I still find it funny.

Given it's an OS feature and the OS is in control of it, MS could certainly have given access to the image if they wanted. Even granting that it was incidental, the result is still that the MPAA has more privacy on my computer than I do, and that's a bad look. "What was the thing I watched with an elephant?" is as plausible a use case as anything else they have suggested.

@foone does it also turn up a blank with DirectX? I seem to recall that requiring a different capture method

Like, they got that for free. They'd have to choose to work around it, and why would they? None of the stated goals of Recall involve it taking pictures of what you're watching on Netflix

@foone I'm still not entirely sure how OBS seems to be able to show Firefox Netflix unless it's just at a lower protection level than other methods, but it can
